Sherri Shepherd Gets Emotional During Abortion Debate On The View
An emotional Sherri Shepherd choked up while sharing her experience with abortion in an extremely intense debate on Wednesday's "View."
The hosts were discussing a Texas law that requires women to have a sonogram before having an abortion. The law mandates doctors to show women sonogram images, play fetal heartbeats and describe features of fetuses. Joy Behar called it "totalitarian," but Elisabeth Hasselbeck compared it to knowing the facts about a procedure before getting a cyst removed or having kidney surgery.
"You would never go through any medical procedure like that...without looking at the scientific evidence," Hasselbeck said. "Why you would ask for an X-ray for those things but not in this case?"
Barbara Walters disagreed. She called the move to get an abortion "a tremendous decision" that can cause "fear and guilt." It would be "heartbreaking," she said, for women to be forced to get a sonogram in those circumstances.
Hasselbeck countered, "What about those who argue that it's not life, that it's not a baby yet?"
Goldberg took issue with her argument, pointing out that some women do not want kids, while others simply cannot afford to have children. She said that women who keep their babies do not get any financial help.
Goldberg's point resonated deeply with Shepherd. She heatedly said that the same people who oppose birth control and abortion often oppose food stamps, welfare and a safety net that would help women who cannot afford to have children. Walters attempted to interject, but a visibly emotional Shepherd cut her off.
"We stop at the picket signs and we don't help you past that!" she said, choking up. "I'm speaking as a girl who had a lot of abortions and I swear to God, if they had shown me a picture of the fetus... I would have put my child in a lot of situations that wouldn't have been good because I didn't have the mental capacity to deal with having a child."

I agree. I found it interesting to see someone who is in the public eye say what many of us here on the board have said that those who want this to pass are also those who don't want to help after the baby is born and are fighting coverage for birth control. I thought that seeing someone who has actually had to make this decision adds a different angle to the conversation. Especially because she is a Christian.
Quoting AmmuJSE:I really hate elisabeth hassleDICK.
I feel for Sherry, she's talked about her abortions before & I think she's conflicted with her faith & her past. sad.

She's very outspoken on her faith too. I was surprised when I first learned that she had had abortions....

Hasselback is an ass.
Really, Elizabeth? Before you have surgery on a cyst or a kidney, they show you pictures and describe the cyst (or kidney) in detail?? NOT.
Stupid bitch.
I can't stand Hassleback either (even though I rarely watch The View anymore.) I think it's just a lame argument "well - you want to know all the details of a surgery right?" There is plenty of information on abortions online and to think women have not thoroughly thought through this is just crazy.
I quit watching "The View" a long time ago but saw this article on several different sites. I got sick of listening to the bickering. If I want to hear women's opinions on something I would rather come here where I can read on response at at a time and not listen to women yell over one another.
I feel for Sherry but I have to disagree. The people who push for these types of things do not neccesarily oppose food stamps and welfare. They want to empower people to find the means to support themselves and be responsible for themselves. PA is there for the people who need it, including mothers. Why has Sherri had to have "a lot of abortions"? Why doesn't that happen to all women? This is about a lack of personal responsibility.
I have a new found respect for Sherry.
For some women, having an abortion is the responsible thing.

Well, I even cringe at "a lot of abortions". Bad choice of words, in my opinion.
