Dear Single Moms on Welfare: Watch out! Rick Santorum is on to your trickery.
At Saturday’s GOP presidential forum hosted by Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum sounded off the many ways that the federal government supposedly opposes marriage. In particular, he highlighted the supposedly common phenomenon of single welfare mothers who aren't marrying their live-in boyfriends so they can get extra goodies from the government:I’m sure everybody, a lot of folks listening here tonight, are gonna know people who are, who father and mother are living together, but they’re not married, for the reason they’re not married is so they, mother, can receive welfare benefits to help support that child, those children.
This article is sarcastic but I think there certainly are some unwed mothers and the fathers of their children who purposefully do not marry so they can continue to collect public assistance.
He's such a twit. They obviously can't marry their baby daddy because the laws forbid them from having three husbands at a time!
If the father of your children live with you his income is accountable when applying for welfare even if you are not married (that is if you claim him). If you have a live in boyfriend who is not the father of your children his income does not count towards your children. But It does kind of urk me when I hear about people who don't marry so they can continue to get assistance... You would think a real man would want to own up to his responsibility and not have someone else filling in where he claims not to be.
And it doesn't matter if you are married to the person you are living with. If they contribute to the household, their income has to be claimed. Yes, I know not everyone on PA claims what they should, but, not getting married to qualify for PA makes no difference.
While I do agree that things like that DO happen, I highly doubt it's a "general rule", and being a political figure that is looking for either re-election or a presidential nod, one should choose their words with a little more care ;-) Making broad generalizations do nothing but promote misinformation and encourage more stereotypical behaviour. Even though this is satire, I am sure there will be a few (even replying in this post no doubt) individuals whom will SWEAR that this is the "norm" for people who recieve any type of means-tested (aka PA, WIC, Section 8) benefits, and use this little ditty as a sounding board to re-inforce the "need" for the abolition of any and all forms of public aid.

I thought you had to provide proof of any and all income coming into the house hold? In Indiana it is set up that way and it would be considered welfare fraud.
