Should People Have More Children While On Public Assistance?
This is a spin off from the post asking if people should get a pet while on public assistance (PA). It is NOT about giving up pets people already have, just as this post isn't about giving up children people already have when they go on public assistance.
In the aforementioned thread a poster said people on PA have the right to have children and acquire pets while on PA and that there is nothing wrong with that. I disagree, and I thought it was common sense that people should not have more children when they cannot afford to feed the children they already have.
Besides not being fair to the taxpayers, it isn't fair to the children who already exist to have meager resources being split by even more people. If you are living in poverty to the point where you need public assistance, you owe to your children to do everything you can to get out of poverty. Having additional children does the opposite.

and this, it's 5 o'clock somewhere and this lecture on Moby Dick sucks....

No they shouldn't. If you're on public assistance (WIC, FS, etc), you clearly aren't in the position to support a baby properly, and you should be focusing your efforts to improving your situation and getting off of the backs of the taxpayers. I also believe that a pregnancy test should be required of women who seek public assistance.
Did you know Moby Dick isn't just about hunting a whale, but the importance of fate versus choice?
Anyway, at least I get to discuss Nietzsche and how brilliant I find him.
Should the government do anything to force people on PA to not have more children? Absolutely not. Too much of a slippery slope for me.
My opinion is that you should not bring children into the world until you can provide for them in a manner in which they deserve. It's not fair to the children to knowingly put them into a situation where they will not feel security from their parents. Reality says though, that won't happen. People will bring children into the world even though their situation is very bad. Those children should not be punished for the bad decisions of their parents. Even if that means that we have to help the irresponsible by providing them assistance.
