Should People Have More Children While On Public Assistance?

This is a spin off from the post asking if people should get a pet while on public assistance (PA).  It is NOT about giving up pets people already have, just as this post isn't about giving up children people already have when they go on public assistance.

In the aforementioned thread a poster said people on PA have the right to have children and acquire pets while on PA and that there is nothing wrong with that.  I disagree, and I thought it was common sense that people should not have more children when they cannot afford to feed the children they already have.

So basically what I am getting from all these debates about food stamps and public assistance is that low income or poor people shouldn't have sex or kids, drink pop or have sweets, tvs, cell phones, a pet or eat out at a restaurant. And also they can't have a nice house car or clothes and if they get their hair done or nails done its even worse. So what are they supposed to?

Work the low income jobs I would say.

Because college cost a heck of a lot more of any of the items on that list (Except maybe having a kid depending on the college you go to and the degree's you are after).

If they enforced bank regulations like they do park rules, we wouldn't be in this mess

What are they supposed to do?  Work to better themselves and get to a position that allows them to live the lifestyle they want to live.  It's not a hard concept.

If you're receiving public assistance in anyway (WIC, food stamps, reduced housing, etc) then there is an interest in what somebody does with their body.  If somebody takes the chance to become pregnant while on PS, their assistance should be immediatley suspended.

I completely agree. The only people that should be allowed to have kids are rich people.

IF a poor or middle class person has a kid-We should rob them of whatever dignity they have left.

I am not rich, and my dh and I are not on public assistance, and are taking care of our children ourselves.

With my oldest I was a single mom, not on public assistance, made it through college and provided for her by myself.  I also made a point not to have any more children until I was married and stable.

Who said only rich people take care if their kids?  Most of my friends and neighbors are middle class and aren't on PA and financially support their children.

That is great for you-But that doesn't take away from people that need assistance.

And how do you know your friends and neighbors are not on PA? There is a chance they are but know how judgemental you are about it and would never tell you.

Using the argument that you used I could say. I am doing just fine with out Public Assistance and my parents never needed Public Assistance so lets just get rid of it entirely. Everyone else should be able to do fine if I did.

I am all for PA.. Look at the rise in food stamps that went along with people losing their jobs and the recession.  Those families need it.  We would have soup lines and kids starving. It is what assistance was made for.

If you aren't able to feed yourself or your children on what you earn, or aren't able to pay your rent without government assistance, it is not fair to bring another child into the world that you can't support.

I know my neighbors and where they work.  I live in a neighborhood where people actually work to pay for what they have.  :)  I can't think of a single neighbor who wouldn't make too much to qualify for PA.  I also live in a neighborhood where the free and reduced lunch numbers are very low, pretty good indicator of how many people are in PA where I live.

I don't think it's fair to tell people what they can and can't do with their own bodies. Commen sence would say not to have more kids if you can't afford it, but it's not our place to tell people what they can do.

So someone whos birth control fails while they're on PA or gets raped, and they get pregnant they should have their assistance suspended if they don't want to abort? Or should we start mandating that all women on PA have to have abortions if they get pregnant?

I think it's unwise to purposely have children while you're living off of PA.

State colleges aren't that expensive, and going to a local community college is a great way to save money while completing basic classes needed for a degree.  There are ways to earn a degree without spending tons of money, you just have to stop finding excuses.

Rape is a completely different monster that doesn't belong here.  But your BC failing is a risk you take.  Again, it comes down to personal choices.

Me and my SO are on assistance I work full time and he is going to school full time also (40 hrs a week at a tech school). It just make me mad that people bitch about people being on assistance like they are just using the system instead of trying to make it better for them so they don't have to be. Not everyone take advantage of it
