Controversial adoption bill advances in House

A House committee approved a bill Thursday morning largely along party
lines that would allow some private adoption agencies to refuse to place
a child with gay couples.
The bill, SB349, sponsored by Sen. Jeff McWaters, R-Virginia Beach, would allow private agencies to deny placement of children if doing so “would violate the agency’s religious or moral convictions or policies.”
The 14-7 vote by the House Committee on Health, Welfare and Institutions sends the bill to the House floor, where approval seems certain. The House has already approved a nearly identical bill sponsored by Del. Todd Gilbert, R-Woodstock, 78-28.
Claire Guthrie Gastanaga, speaking for Equality Virginia and the ACLU, pleaded with committee members to delay acting on the bill until next year, and warned of unintended consequences that advocates of the bill may not like.
“Satanists can set up an adoption agency” under terms of the bill, she said. “We all know this is all about denying gay and lesbian couples the right to have a family. There’s no public clamor for this.”
Colorado is gorgeous...I'm really thinking I want to move there (I'm in Northern VA.)

Just happened this morning. I'm from Hampton Roads and all this legislation is honestly making me want to high tail it out of here.
