would putting a diaper on my pup while he is in the house help with potty training him?*pics*
lol. hugo is such a sweety! i just love him, but now that he has figured out he can easily jump the baby gate, and has started to have free roam of the house, i am finding little piddles and poops here, there and everywhere! ( thank god we dont have any carpet!)
i have some plastic cloth diaper covers, and i am seriously considering putting them on him while he is in the house, and taking them off when i put him outside.
do you think this would work?
these are rubber pants that go over a cloth diaper, he doesn't seem to mind wearing them, and he DID just ask to go outside.
so thats good, right? i have both his parents, i thought they might help me with this, i guess not! lol
if this does not work, i will do the leash thing and start crating him, despite his sorrowful cries, lol. he is totaly spoiled, he is the only pup i kept from our litter.
That wouldn't be training. That would just allow him to go when he feels like it. It's really up to you to train him....he'll follow your lead. First thing in the morning. And about once an hour. If he eats or plays, take him outside immediately when done, as that will make him have to go. Crate him when you're not home. You can train him within a week.
It would help YOU but I dont' think he'd learn anything except how to chew them off! :)
he is only 12 weeks old, and up until now has been paper trained, ( it's pretty cold here in sask, and he doesn't really like going outside) an animal wont poop or pee on themselves, so he wouldn't be peeing in the diaper cover, and lord knows i have no other use for them! i DO put him outside, i will leave him out there for awhile with his parents, but he doesn't seem to do his business while he is out there? he is a really smart pup, but seems to think he should do his business in the warm comfy indoors... o.0
and he kinda sorta goes everywhere with me, he even comes to work with me, and suprisingly, he is perfect at work!?
when he is crated he acts like he is being killed. he is kinda sorta spoiled

lol that wouldn't be good. i used to put a type of home made belly band thing around my adult males waist, covering his weiner, and would take it off when he went outside ( i got him as an adult, he had lived in a kennel his whole life, never ever been in a house before) and it only took a few days for him to figure it out.

At 12 weeks, you need to train him. Plastic pants wouldn't help. Hook a leash to your belt, and keep him with you when he's roaming. Otherwise crate him - he WILL get used to it. When you take him out, take him out with a leash on - don't just "let" him out. Take him to the same spot each time.
I don't think he would learn anything from it. We have four dogs now. The only way our dogs learned was to take them outside all the time to the grass and praise them when they went. They still had alot of accidents but It worked out best for us. They were all potty trained by their first year. It help to have our older dog around the puppies to train them. They watched him out back in the yard and learned much quicker that way.
When he acts that way in his crate, tap the top and say NO. He'll learn in a day to not do that. His crate needs to be treated as his den, not a punishment area.
At this age, you need to take him out purposely to train him to poop/pee. By just sticking him outside, that shows him to go when the urge hits, and then he comes in and continues to go when the urge hits.

No but it would give you the enjoyment of cleaning up a shredded diaper.
