Police: Alaska girl locked in frigid bedroom dies; mom on lam

A 3-year-old girl from America's northernmost community died and her younger sister suffered hypothermia after their mother and her boyfriend locked the girls inside a bedroom with a window open to temperatures of 30 degrees below zero because the girls had wet their beds, authorities said.

The mother, 28-year-old elementary teacher Esther G. Edwards-Gust, was apparently on the lam Saturday, a day after she and her boyfriend, 29-year-old Richard Tilden Jr., were indicted in the child's death. Tilden was in custody.

The couple shared a home with Edwards-Gust's 1- and 3-year-old daughters in the Inupiat Eskimo community of Barrow.

Police say the two girls last month were trapped overnight in their bedroom with a window open to temperatures that dropped to 30 degrees below zero. According to KTUU-TV in Anchorage, both children were diagnosed with extreme hypothermia and flown to an Anchorage hospital, where the 3-year-old died.

Tilden later told authorities he'd been drinking the night before and opened the bedroom window to air out the room because the girls wet their beds, according to court documents. He also said the door's latch was broken, making it impossible for anyone inside the room to open it.

A grand jury on Friday indicted Tilden and Edwards-Gust on charges including manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide. Tilden also faces second-degree murder and assault charges. He was arrested last month.

A warrant has been issued for Edwards-Gust's arrest. Police didn't immediately return a message Saturday, and a home listing for Barrow's police chief was disconnected. A person who answered the phone at the borough jail said Edwards-Gust was not in custody there.

Tilden called 911 when he discovered the 3-year-old was unresponsive and not breathing Feb. 2.

Officers said Tilden smelled of alcohol when they were at the apartment, court documents said. The news was first reported by the Anchorage Daily News.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I have never, nor will I ever understand people who can do things like this to their own children.  And there seems to be more and more of it going on, or at least that we are hearing about...  what the hell is going on that kids killing kids, parents killing kids seems to be becoming the norm??

That is horrible. I can't imagine someone locking their kids in a freezing room like that... And for wetting the bed??? They are 1 and 3!!!

I get the accident.  Doesn't sound like they intended any harm to the girls, but that they're just really really stupid.  Like need to be supervised stupid.

The guy opened the window to air out the room.  But he was wasted so he failed to think beyond that part and didn't consider the effects of subzero temperatures on the sleeping children.

He then walked out and shut the door, the door with the broken latch that couldn't be opened from the inside.  So he forgot they were locked in.

At least in this particular story, the children were not forced while scared and screaming into an icebox or something.

In all likelihood, the older girl died in her sleep.  At least that's what I'm going to tell myself so I myself can sleep tonight.

So, so ridiculously sad.

Once again, I believe all females should be sterilized with some sort of procedure that can only be reversed upon passing some sort of licensure.  And that the license exam or practicum or whatever would need to be renewed every so often so that if the assessment could not be passed, the woman would once again undergo sterilization.

I hate reading stuff like this. I cannot understand why anyone would harm their children and I hate to sound judgemental but I can't understand drinking around your children. It would take more than a drink or two to cause a lapse in judgement like that. My biggest responsibility in life are my babies and anyone else's babies I am left in charge of. I just don't get it.

1 mom liked this
I never saw this story in the ADN.
How sad :( Barrow is, I believe, the furthest north village we have in Ak (could be wrong) but I KNOW it gets freezing cold! -30 makes any house cold with windows shut, I cannot imagine having a window open. Those poor babies!

Men kill their children also, so why take it out on women?  Why shouldn't men have to take a test or be sterilized?

I want to agree with you about it being an accident - but why would she run if it was an accident?  What mom, no matter how drunk, lets that happen to her babies?

You are right. Why only protect the children from stupid women? Let's sterilize everyone so that in order to procreate, both potential parents have to obtain the license. I like that much better.

As far as why did the mom run...I dunno. I have more sympathy (though extremely limited) for the guy cause he was the idiot who opened the window and was too drunk to close it before the room iced over. Not that much sympathy though, as I find it disgusting for anyone responsible for children to allow themselves to become so intoxicated that they can no longer provide appropriate care. Maybe the mom ran to the great outdoors to suffer the same fate of her oldest. At least, I'd be ok with that.

I read about that the other day, too sad :(

Unfortunately there are always a few stories of kids freezing to death here each winter. It was so bad that a few years ago they started a new local commercial campaign telling people it was Illegal to leave their children in the car in winter while they WENT AND DRANK IN THE BARS. They'd had multiple children die from exposure and freezing temps after being found locked in cars while their parents were in the bar getting drunk. It was horrible.

Then you get the stories of the teens found frozen to death after they wandered off drunk from a party.

Ah the sadness of Alaskan winters mixed with really stupid people... :(
