STOP Congress from signing the UN Convention on the Rights of Children...It's not what you think
I came across this web site "parentalrights.org", and was horrified at what I read. I feel I should pass this info on to all of you Moms and Grandmoms. It is a UN sponsored treaty that many countries have signed, although a lot of them don't abide by it.....most European countries do. What most people don't understand is that when we sign a UN treaty, that treaty then takes precedence over our own constitution. In a nutshell, the gov't (via UN law) will be completely controlling how we raise our children. Below I will list some of the things in this treaty. Please check out "parentalrights.org" for a full list, and a complete explanation of these things.
1. Kids would have the ability to choose their own religion while parents would only have the authority to give their children advice about religion.
2. The best interest of the child principle would give the gov't the ability to override every decision made by every parent if a gov't worker disagreed with the parents decision. (This has already happened hundreds of times in this country. Only you won't be able to argue it out in court, if this treaty is signed.)
3. According to existing interpretation, it would be illegal for a nation to spend more on national defense than it does on child welfare.
4. Kids would acquire a legally enforceable right to leisure.
5. 
Allowing parents to opt their kids out of sex ed has been held to be out of compliance with the CRC.
6. Can't opt out of sex ed & girls can get abortions without informing parents.
7. Parents would no longer be able to administer reasonable spankings to their kids.
8. A murder aged 17 yrs & 11 months & 29 days at time of his crime could no longer be sentenced to life in prison.
Please check out this web site, and if you can, please give them a donation. They have petitions to sign to send to Congress asking them not to sign this treaty. They also have members working with State legislatures trying to get them to pass bills on parental and children's rights in all 50 states. So far, only a handful have these bills, and a few are working on it.
This is just one more step in taking away our rights. It is another UN sponsored bill, along with the Small Arms Treaty Bill (which is a backdoor approach to taking away our rights to own a gun), that Hilary Clinton and Obama are pushing Congress to sign. Please write your Congressmen/women and inform them that you will not be voting for them if they sign this bill.
Please pass this information on to all of your friends and family before it's too late

Well it's not hard to see how low some people on the left will stoop when they disagree with someone else on the right. The left won't discuss disagreements, they attack. If you think that by signing this agreement some time in the future or the small arms treaty (which obama and clinton are really working on) won't be a back door to taking away more and more of our rights, then you've got your head in the sand. I won't stoop to your level to say it in words you would really understand. Just because they voted it down once, doesn't mean it won't come up again. How many times does obama have to say that he wants us to be more like Europe....you know all those broke "Socialist" countries?
When I first discovered this site, I thought it was interesting, and that perhaps as a grandmother, I could learn something or offer up some advice on raising children. I have two intelligent, well adjusted grown daughters (in their 30's), and three grandchildren. But the way you all attack each other and the trash talk on here is just disgusting. I'm sure none of you will miss me, so I will just stick to the Cafe Mom Conservative site, where the woman are more civilized and care about what is happening to our country.

Actually there are plenty of people trying to do both of those things. Every law put in place about how you can teach your children (California made a law that I believe was struck down that only people with teaching licenses could teach children... several private school teachers were arrested, and other places have looked at homeschooling) is taking away one more right from parents over their children. Every law that restricts gun ownership is one more step to an all out ban. If you can't see this then I don't know what to tell you. Anyone who thinks the government isn't out to take one right after another has been living under a rock somewhere with no access to the news.
ETA: Here are some cases in which courts have restricted parents rights:
Brown v. Hot, Sexy and Safer (someone actually had a child lick a condom!!) - ruled that parents could not take their children out of a controversal sex ed presentation
In re Sumey - ruled that a child could be taken out of her parents' home because she objected to the rules... she wanted to sleep with her boyfriend and smoke marijuana. The court agreed with her point of view.
Herndon V. Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Board of Education and Cornwell Immediato v. Rye Neck School District - the courts decided that the state's right to direct the secular education of a child are superior to the rights of the parents as long as it is rationally related to a liegitimate governmental interest
Cornwell v. State Board of Education - the courts refused to force the school to provide opt-outs for sex ed
These are just a few. There are many, MANY more. These are all at state level, not federal, but it is only a matter of time.
