Fox News' Monica Crowley Apologizes For Sandra Fluke Engagement Comment

Monica Crowley

Fox News pundit Monica Crowley apologized to Sandra Fluke for a controversial remark about her recent engagement on Friday.

On Thursday, Crowley reacted to news of Fluke's engagement to her longtime boyfriend by tweeting, "To a man?" She was roundly criticized for the offensive remark, with people accusing her of "bigotry" and calling her "homophobic."

Crowley apologized on Friday, tweeting:

Fluke, a Georgetown law student, stepped into the national spotlight when Rush Limbaugh called her as a "slut" and a "prostitute" for advocating employer-covered contraception. Limbaugh's attack sparked a firestorm of controversy, and a massive exodus of advertisers from his show.

Crowley's apology comes after Fluke came down on her initial comments on Thursday night. Fluke told MSNBC's Ed Schultz that she considered the comment "blatant homophobia" and "hate speech."

"Well, you know, where I'm from, when someone tells you they've become engaged, you say congratulations rather than engaging in hate speech," she said.

"That said, I'm not going to let this kind of thing get to me personally," Fluke continued. "What really bothers me about it [is] the blatant homophobia in the comment, and the idea that that is an acceptable thing to say publicly."

I don't get how it was homophobia if the question asked if she was marrying a man.  The post was not about gay marriage being wrong.

It depends on the context of the question. If it was "to a man?" in the "lol ur so gay" way, its offensive by suggesting that gay is an insult. Which is kind of what I got from it...

I don't know.  I thought it was funny.  Sounds mostly like sarcasm, although I don't know enough about the story.  Brush it off girlfriend and drive on.

I would have tweeted back "that's right girlfriend".....smiley face.

Is Monica Crowley married?  No.

I think her "joke" was lame in the extreme- and lame in that highshool mean-girl kind of way. Just, blech.

Welcome to America, where the phrase 'to a man? is now considered 'blatant homophobia' and 'hate speech.'

I think it's disingenuous to act like the "to a man" tweet was just an innocent question.  It was rude and presumed that not only is Fluke gay, but that there was something wrong with it.  Crowly knows her tweets are public, she was being a bitch and saying the equivalent of "haha, you're gay!"  Which is why she apologized.

Be that as it may, who gives a crap what Crowly tweets, ever.  lol
