Five arrested in suspected bridge bombing plot near Cleveland

Five people, claiming to be anarchists, have been arrested in Cleveland for trying to blow up a four-lane bridge across the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

The public was never in danger from the devices, according the FBI. The explosive devices were inoperable and controlled by an undercover FBI agent. Charges against the suspects were filed Tuesday morning in Cleveland.

Douglas Wright, 26, Brandon Baxter, 20, and Anthony Hayne, 35, were arrested Monday and charged with conspiracy and attempted use of explosive material to damage physical property affecting interstate commerce, according to WEWS-NewsNet5 in Cleveland. Two other men, Connor Stevens, 20, and Joshua Stafford, 23, were also arrested, but not charged, the station reported.

The suspects were targeting the state Route 82 bridge that spans the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, according to WEWS. More than 13, vehicles travel over the bridge each day, and 2.1 million people visit the national park each year, the station reported.

The suspects had bought fake explosives and placed them near the bridge Monday. The suspects were arrested after 9 p.m. Monday, the station reports.

The suspects had considered a series of plots over several months. Among the alternative targets was the Veteran's Memorial Bridge, according to WEWS.

The suspects' initial plot involved the use of smoke grenades to distract law enforcement in order to topple signs of financial institution on high rise buildings in downtown Cleveland, according to the federal complaint.

One of the suspects had said during the planning of the attacks that they were against corporate America and financial institutions, and not merely random acts of violence, the complaint states.

The plot later developed to the utilization of explosive materials, and the five men allegedly conspired to obtain C-4 explosives contained in two improvised explosive devices to be placed and remotely detonated, according to the complaint.

One of the suspects, Wright, had talked about driving a car into the Federal Reserve Bank to blow it up, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

The FBI is displaying this map in the room where it will apparently announce the arrests of five people in connection …

The FBI's Cleveland office is displaying a photo of the apparent bridge in question, according to WEWS-NewsNet5 in Cleveland. The state Route 82 bridge is in Brecksville, south of Cleveland.

I'm so glad you added the affidavit information. They aren't a very bright group: 'let's throw tacks out of the back of the car to avoid getting caught!' and someone needs to explain terrorism to them. What they were attempting to do was a terrorist act. But no one wants to talk about domestic terrorism especially committed by idiot white guys.

I have given myself a mission tomorrow or Thursday - find cases of domestic terrorism. You'd think with this and the Seattle anarchists people might be a little more interested.

Only those who can't think for themselves. They seem to forget that Earth Liberation Front, Animal liberation Front (think that's it) as well as anarchist and militia groups are considered terrorist groups when they start causing harm with intent to instill fear and terror.

Peoples' close mindedness really pisses me off.

I don't think so. I think it's being kept separate but lumped with the other 'anarchists.' Maybe there is an implication that the anarchists aren't bright enough to be effective terrorists. :-)

See, the media is doing their job of naming what is and isnt an act of terror or a potential act of terror. smh

Did the affidavit say? I'd be curious how the FBI investigated it. I'm betting it was a domestic terrorism investigation.

I dont know. I have a cold or something, so I dont remember if it was mentioned in the second article I posted or not.

It probably was investigated that way.

Wasnt that MI militia group that was going to attack a police funeral investigated as such? But, Im not sure many people look at that as terrorism either, though.
