Student Kicked Out After Mother Complains About Slur

Brea Persley, 13, says her science teacher told her in front of the whole class to "sit your nappy-headed self down."

KTLA News
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (KTLA) -- A student at Inglewood's Century Academy of Excellence was kicked out after her mother complained about an alleged racial slur by a teacher.

Brea Persley, 13, says her science teacher told her in front of the whole class last week to "sit your nappy-headed self down."

"When the kids started laughing, it brought back the memories of when I was in 4th grade and kids used to laugh at me and tease me," Persley told KTLA.

Teacher Kelly Dempsey called the family and apologized about
the comment.

But when Brea's mother Shronda Williams requested a meeting with school principal Giselle Edman, there was no apology.

Williams said the principal told her she was "happy" the teacher made the comment and that "bad things need to happen to mean kids."

Edman then expelled the 13-year-old from the school, Williams said.

In a letter to Williams, the school said her daughter was banned "due to the fact that you scolded the principal."

Brea's family said she did get into a fight on campus and has been cited for tardiness and gum chewing.

Edman declined a request for comment.

Brea's family says it's filing a complaint with the school's accreditation agency.

In the meantime, the family is trying to figure out how to get Brea the final three weeks of school she needs before summer break.

I would love to hear the school's side on this one.

From what I am reading, that teacher and the Principal both need to be held accountable.

In another article on this, it mentioned how the majority of the kids are AA and that the majority receive either or both free breakfast and free lunch.  Pissed me off, the spin they put on the story.

We have a similar issue where the Principal refused to apologize. All we've asked is for a letter of apology but he refuses just stating that they followed procedure. In my case, the teacher called CPS over a small mark on my daughter's foot which was cleared by CPS. She never had any signs of abuse in the past nor has she ever tried to speak with us about anything. The thing is that once there's a CPS complaint, that stays on your record even if it's cleared. A few months later, she did the same thing to my nephew who was in the same class. Needless to say there have been many issues throughout the year with that class which we have tried to correct and we feel it was mostly due to retribution.

We're planning on a class action. Right now there's four sets of parents that want to be involved.

the slur was out of line but the child needs a mother who is willing to understand she was doing the wrong thing too. two wrongs don't make a right and the kid should be punished for what she did wrong. the teacher needs to be punished for what she did wrong too, she did apologize but i highly doubt the kid apologized too.

I agree that the child should be disciplined for her behavior in school.  She may very well have been.  We do not know that she wasn't.

Regardless of that, the teacher and the Principal both where way out of line.

There usually is.

But no matter what, the teacher was out of line.  Period.

As for the Principal, going off of what is there, she was out of line as well.  However, like I stated earlier, I would like to hear the school's side on this.
