Sheriff: Father kills man sexually abusing his daughter

(CNN) -- A Texas father caught a man sexually assaulting his 4-year-old daughter and punched him in the head repeatedly, killing him, authorities said.

The father was casually acquainted with the alleged abuser, said Lavaca County Sheriff Micah Harmon.

Neither has been publicly identified.

The girl was left inside the family's house during the social gathering, while other members of her family were tending to horses, the sheriff said.

The alleged abuser was known for his horse-grooming abilities, Harmon said.

The father returned to the house, caught the man in the act, and stopped him by striking him in the head several times, Harmon said.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene, while the daughter was taken to a local hospital in Victoria, Texas, for examinations before being released.

The incident took place Saturday.

Harmon described the girl as "OK besides the obvious mental trauma."

Asked whether they would press charges against the father, the sheriff responded, "You have a right to defend your daughter. He acted in defense of his third person. Once the investigation is completed we will submit it to the district attorney who then submits it to the grand jury, who will decide if they will indict him."

Harmon described the dad as "very remorseful," adding that he didn't know the man was going to die.

Authorities were withholding the deceased man's name while they notified next of kin. Officials did not know immediately if he has a prior criminal history.

This is Texas.   If he is lying, he will be strung up.   But the reality is what he says took place, probably took place.

Like I said earlier, even if charges are brought, the county will pay for his defense if needed.

The four yr olds around me are very vocal and the police know how to talk to kids so why the suspicion that this isnt what happened?

I AM predicting the future.  I forgot to also speculate that "they" will find out these two were partners in some sort of crime and that the father believed the guy was cheating him or that his partner wanted to confess because he had a guilty conscience.  Perhaps they were both molesting the child and other guy felt bad about it.

I'm leaning toward the father's killing the man having nothing to do with child molest, at all.

Quoting JoshRachelsMAMA:

They'll? As in she's predicting the future?

Quoting Shortiekt:

Aw shit I didn't see that part. LOL

Quoting JonJon:

He supposedly already feels remorse, says he didn't intend to kill his pal.

They'll find out his pal was blackmailing him or having an affair with his wife or was insured and the assailant the beneficiary.

Quoting Shortiekt:

I'm sure the father doesn't regret his actions.

No. He didn't mean to kill him.

Even with SYG, they still have to file charges and conduct an investigation to determine if the facts support what the assailant told them.

Quoting SLTmom:

Hey, crazier things have been known to happen? Right?

But, they did bring the child to the hospital, and I'm sure a thorough exam was done.

If the dad is telling the truth, I wouldn't file charges though.

Quoting JonJon:

All these "He had a right to kill" replies with basically no proof what the assailant said happened, happened.

Very surprising.

I believe that without evidence to support what he alleged happened, he needs to go to jail for at least manslaughter.

I hope they did a rape kit on the child.  It might be dad's dna they find.

Quoting JonJon:

Quoting zagomez:

No, they have a choice as to when to file charges. They usually do an invesetogation prior to filing, in an effort to have evidence supporting the charges.

Texas doesn't have SYG

4 moms liked this

This happend about 45 minutes from my house.. I am not sure what article you are reading it happend behind a barn according to our local news.. The entire community has rallied around this man..

If that was my daughter I would have done the same thing...

Quoting JonJon:

For all we know, he killed the guy because the guy walked in on HIM sexually assaulting his own four-year-old and he didn't want anyone to find out he wasn't good ol' Joe from Pocano.

I mean, who leaves a four-year-old alone in the house while they tend to the horses?  She would have been with them with a brush learning to groom the horses.  She only would have been home with a caretaker.  I say the caretaker was Daddy Dearest.

The article is brief and probably doesn't contain all the details but what there is so far makes the dad's story very hinky.
