I have been watching Sister Wives, a reality(?) show on TLC. The show features and follows a family of 1 husband, 4 wives and 16 chidlren. They are one big happy family. They are Mormons and belong to the Fundalmentalist church who believe in living plural marriage ( 1man, mulitiple wives and hence, many chidlren).

They were run out of their home state for violating Bigamy laws there.

So, I was just wondering, what is your take on this lifestyle? Is it even a lifestyle? or a relgion? Our next president might be a morman- does that have any bearing on your vote/views? Do you think this family (and others like them) have the right to live their life as they see fit? or are they breaking the law and should be prosecuted?

I'd like to hear from you (especially those of you who are living the plural life!) before I add my 2 cents.

You have to understand the history of plural marriage to answer the question.  Plural marriage did not become illegal until a few decades after Mormons were practicing it.  The people of the day thought it was weird, among other things, and they started killing the mormons, so they left the state of Missouri and migrated, ending up in Utah (shortened version lol).  Unfortunately, the union refused to allow Utah to become a true state of the union if they allowed polygamy.  So against our constitution, utah outlawed polygamy, along with the rest of the states.

The bottom line is that polygamy never should have been made illegal in the first place.  The only reason it was had everything to do with religious persecution.  Our country should be ashamed and strike that law from all states.  The government should not be able to tell a person who they can or cannot marry, regardless of gender or number.

I would never do it, but i'm not religious and I don't care what people do as long as they don't hurt others.  I'm not okay with forced/arranged marriages, esp with young girls.

I don't think the Sister Wives family is that happy.  I think Robyn is the favorite and the others know it.

Not enough options for your poll.  I believe in religious freedom, but the laws are against polygamy.

Even the Bible tells you to obey the laws of the land.

It became the law of the land BECAUSE of religious persecution.  They did not violate the law of the land by proclaiming the polygamy tenent.  The government violated the constitutional rights of a religious group by making polygamy illegal.  At the time they were made, the law was about squashing religious freedom.

I agree.
I actually see some benefits to this type of arrangement too. Less work overall and if hubby is being a butt-head one night you can send them off to a different wife... And they'd be more likely to walk the line since a screw up would mean hearing about it from 2 or 3 wives and not just one....

Hmmm.... They may be onto something!

I believe that every consenting adult should have the freedom to marry who and however many people they want. I choose monogamy for myself, but I think that everyone should be allowed the freedom to choose when it comes to marriage.

We're not in Germany, are we?  ;)

So that makes polygamy okay?  Cuz the Nazi's were right?  Not following you.

Most of the prophets had more than one wife and there is nothing in the NT that says that plural marriage is wrong and not to do it.

I know you can post verses that say one man and one woman, etc, but, if you read into it more and the context of the time of that writing, that is to specific people, not the entire population of followers.

I think consenting adults should be able to marry whoever they want, if all the adults are ok with it, they should be able to do it.

I dont see anything wrong with it, if you are happy and the family is happy...why not.

...I didnt think that he married all of them, I thought he was only legally married to the first wife?
