I feel as though I'm constantly hearing someone whine about student loans and now we have some cities offering repayment of loans for relocation (though, is this really new? Haven't certain areas alwasy offered this?)
Recently a friend posted a cartoon on facebook: A boy moving back home with "5 figure student loan debt" on his back. His parents are giving him grief, stating that they started out with nothing. His reply "I wish I could have started out with nothing!"
What are your thoughts on the situation? Should students come out of any 4 year University without any type of financial obligation? Is a 4 year degree becoming the high school diploma?
Quoting Stephanie329:
Hey, other Stephanie, I agree. I wish like hell I hadn't taken out massive college loans. It was blatantly stupid.
Quoting stephanie73401:
Why do people think that they must have a loan to go to college? What happened to people working to pay for things with real money instead of credit and interest? I think teaching your children that debt is acceptable is the wrong path completely.
Hey Hey other, other Stephanie lol! You are one of the few that have actually admitted that they were a stupid choice. At least you have learned from that
Quoting anxiousschk:When you say "dual degree" what do you mean? A double major which ends in two degrees?
Quoting momto3infl:I dont know-I just know that with my Assoc Degree and my husband's dual degree we still owe over 100,000.00 from years ago. We have paid some back-but the last few years have had to put in deferments to keep up with the rest of our bills-we have figured that the gov will never get back all the money in our life time. Pushing our kids for grades to qualify for grants and scholarships and not do the loans if all possible-that was the only way we were able to attend college.

So how would a student make enough money to pay for college?
PLAN AHEAD and WORK HARD. It's the same two things you will need to do IN college if you want that great paying job when you get your degree. That piece of paper isn't what gets you hired after graduation, it's the work ethic that will get it for you.

depends on the university.
Quoting Aamy:
Because schools today wont let you tale classes unless they get all of their money. There is no pay as you go.

You've completely missed the boat with interpritating what I said here. You work for the money BEFORE you apply and then you WORK to survive while you go.

Ok , so since major companies want a degree for you to work for then, so a person has to get a lower paying job to save up money, hmmm so what ppl are supposed to wait till they are 40 to go to school? But the of course the cost of college has been increasing the wholeheartedly time your saving ....

I'm not going to be baited into an argument with someone who can't spell. If you would like to come back with an intelligent rebuttle I will reconsider.
In the other post on this I posted my state's numbers. While you *can* room and board at a 2 year, there aren't many around us who need to. Often, finding an off campus apt. is much cheaper. You can also hold down a job and go to college full-time.
Now, a degree is *not* necessary for all types of jobs. If you equate a degree with a technical license, then I can agree. My hair stylist makes a fortune. No official degree, but she had to get licensed. My friend's husband, the electrician...again, makes good money, no degree, just a license (for which he attended a very affordable electrical school), mechanics? same thing.
I maintain that you need to have a clear picture of your finances before you enter college. You need to have a good idea of what it will cost you and what financial aid is available to you. If you look at that final number and think you will be bitching about it in 4 years, find another plan.

I urge you to read this. To have a future you must acquire a degree... Costs are rising every year.

This link allows you to pick a school and get a snapshot of costs.
Quoting anxiousschk:I don't believe that's the case, though.
You don't want that much debt? Don't take out all the loans. Don't attend an absurdly expensive school and complain about your "crushing debt." How'd you get there? Oh, that's right, all on your own.
Quoting tambrathegreat:I think a better title to this post would have been? Crushing Debt Before You've Actually Started: What's the Big Deal?
I think people should have to pay back their loans but the price of college is outrageous. Sense the price of college isn't going down, they need to lower interest rates. Help out students, help them get job while in sxhool, etc... I know my college didn't do anything to help me.
