A boy at my sons HS was allowed to bring his rifle to school

For his final in English he had to write a paper and then give a presentation about a subject of his choice. He brought the rifle to show how he can break it down and put it back together. He also went over gun safety.

He met with the principal and his parents. They developed a safety plan. the principal escorted him from his car to his office. the gun styed in the office until it was time for him to give his report. then the principal escorted him to the classroom and remained in the room while he gave the report. When the gun was removed from the case they checked to make sure it was unloaded...3 times.

I am glad this happened. This is why I love our school.

I don't like guns, but I'm glad the boy was able to share his hobby with the other kids. It's refreshing when schools take a realistic approach to things. Sounds like you have a good school.

I should add that this is a private school.

I took a live sheep to school in 8th grade for a similar talk. I probably would have just videotaped it at home and brought that in fr the assignment. Just seems easier to me.

That is really great! I doubt it would happen in a public school, but it is really good that people can use common sense about things like this! In the school, I grew up in..the boys would bring their guns to school in their truck in the back window gun rack and when a kid got a new gun, you would find the principal out at the track doing target practice...but I grew up in a small southern town...the first week of deer season half the kids were late to school and our church never had church on the opening weekend of deer season.

Why would you have been upset?

because I don't think school is a place for guns. I don't like them and would have prefered advanced warning, so I could keep my child home that day.

If there was ever a gun around my child without my permission or knowlegde. I'd be pissed and I would have the heads of every person who had a part in it.

"the principal escorted him to the classroom and remained in the room while he gave the report"  I could really care less. How many principles are really trained in gun safety? I wouldn't say anymore than the average person. IMO It should have been AT LEAST a police officer, they are trained in gun safety.
