An FBI warning tonight to anyone who uses the internet: You could lose all online access July 9th if your system was infected by hackers.
Worldwide, around 570,000 systems were infected with Malware by hackers.
The warnings about the Internet problem have been splashed across Facebook and Google. Internet service providers have sent notices, and the FBI set up a special website.
"There are a lot of folks out there who do not know that their computer has been infected," FBI Special Agent David Couvertier said.
The FBI intercepted the international hacking ring last fall. Criminals were re-directing computers from legitimate websites to fictitious websites, making money with each hit.
David Couvertier says the operation started in 2007, and as of right now, around 300,000 computers are still infected. 64,000 of those are in the U.S.
"They created a very, very sophisticated network of servers and they were redirecting individual computers, company and business computers, even government computers to these fraudulent websites," Couvertier said.
The FBI stepped in and linked those infected systems through a government server. On July 9, that server will be taken down; which means if you are using that server to gain Internet access, you will lose all online access that day.
To check your system, go to www.dcwg.org and follow the instructions.
The site includes links to respected commercial sites that will run a quick check on the computer, and it also lays out detailed instructions if users want to actually check the computer themselves.
