Is it ok to let children watch scary or violent movies?

I don't let my children watch these types of movies. Childhood is only a blink of an eye in time and I would like them to remain relatively innocent from such worldly horrors. What is your opinion? Is it ok because it's not real and only a movie?

It depends on the individual child.

Some people are never okay with watching things like horror movies... Others are okay from a young age.

It all depends on the child.

Personally, My kids watch a good mix of things.

Do they watch scary movies? My 5 year old loves them. He sleeps with Jack Skellington though so no surprise there. He will also tell you that movies are fake and tell you what other characters certain actors have played...

My 3 year old daughter LOVES vampires. Enough said. HaHa!

Sure.. I just took my 6 yr old to see the Avengers. well, after his daddy watched it first.

He has watched Thor and the Iron Man movies (though, not the first 20 minutes of the first Iron Man.. he doesn't need to watch torture scenes)

It is all in how you view them and if you make sure your child knows that it is fake.

It depended on the movie, but yes, they've watched movies that were not recommended for their age group. I believe in children knowing the difference between fiction and reality. I also believe in letting them see happy endings to things that aren't happy.
