Is it ok to let children watch scary or violent movies?

Posted by   + Show Post

I don't let my children watch these types of movies. Childhood is only a blink of an eye in time and I would like them to remain relatively innocent from such worldly horrors. What is your opinion? Is it ok because it's not real and only a movie?

I don't allow my children to watch things like that. They scare easily.

Boobah, that was the name of that weird cartoon....that one was really weird.

I don't mind Spongebob so much, but back when we had cable I had a huge problem with those stupid Lou and Lou the Safety Patrol kids. Any show that tells my kids it's ok to get on to me is definitley a problem, not to mention they are some nosy, bossy little bastards (not real kids so I don't feel bad for calling them names). I told my kids that no one wants to be your friend if you act like that and if they EVER talk to me the way those kids talked to their parents they'd regret it. There's a reason I raise them and they don't raise me.

I didn't mind when it was teaching how to cross a street safely and stuff (though I'd already gone over that, but hey, reiteration is never a bad thing), but when I saw them get on to their father and talk to him like that? No way. Then it began being about telling kids what they should eat and drink. Let the kids watch their dang cartoons. Like Lazytown. That show didn't say what to do. It showed what happened when you did something and showed an alternate way of doing things. Like the little boy had to eat too much candy to feel sick, not just a piece.

Kids cartoons are getting really messed up...

I dont let my kids watch barney or spongebob, because they are weird. Barney is like a hypnotising thing and spongebob is ADHD all the way. I think he is the reason most kids are Cookie!

Quoting Jalestra:

I let my kids watch whatever they want, providing it isn't porn or gives them nightmares. Except Barney and that really weird cartoon that used to come on...it was disturbing, but I couldn't pinpoint why...better to be safe than sorry.

Anyhow, as long as I'm sitting there with them to talk to them, then I don't see the problem myself. I get more worried about shows geared specifically TO kids that teach them stupid crap.

My children watch some scary movies.. However Anime is huge in our house so there is often something violent being watched. As for games my kids have played World of War Craft, Everquest 1 & 2 since they could sit on their daddies lap.. 2 of my kids now have their own accounts (one isn't old enough but is in a family guild with his daddy and they protect him)

my middle daughter loves playing Halo and some zombie killing game...  I don't think its destroying their innocents school, friends, family and eing apart of the real world does that for them..  There is little need to protect or hide them from the world they live in.. I rather they know now and grow up to make a difference rather then hide them away and they learn to allow horrors to keep happening. But that's me and my family.. It works for us I don't begrudge others their family choices.

I know what you mean.  Kids ARE people, too.  A few of our DS love horror flicks, and one of them is fascinated with the makeup artistry and he is 9 yrs old.  We bought them a 2nd hand video camera about a year ago and they come up with some of the most creative things to film.  The only thing that we don't allow anyone to watch in the house are movies like, "I Spit on Your Grave-sish" movies or Rob Zombie movies because they are waayyyy over the top physiologically.  I can't even watch them and deal with the anxiety, brutality and sick terror any one of his movies creates.

Personally, My kids watch a good mix of things.

Do they watch scary movies? My 5 year old loves them. He sleeps with Jack Skellington though so no surprise there. He will also tell you that movies are fake and tell you what other characters certain actors have played...

My 3 year old daughter LOVES vampires. Enough said. HaHa!

I don't let my oldest, and he's 9.

he didn't even make it past the first plastic mannequins episode of the new Doctor Who.

it's a bit disappointing as I was hoping he'd enjoy horror movies with us when he's older, I'd planned to start him out with older, benign stuff like Swamp Thing, but he's too easily frightened.

My dd is one of those kids that can handle anything except zombies.  She loves to watch animal documentaries, and when the animals kill another animal, it doesn't bother her.  It does sound horrible, but she is an animal lover and gets mad when she sees a human hurt an animal but an animal killing another animal on those documentaries has never bothered her.

Quoting Mommy_of_Riley:

It depends on the individual child.

Some people are never okay with watching things like horror movies... Others are okay from a young age.

It all depends on the child.

haha my dd can't watch any shows where they have live magic tricks (like americas got talent) she always sits there and tells you how they did it.

Yeah cartoons are really annoying sometimes. My sons favorite is Calliou. But yea I HATE spongebob. *IM READY IM READY IM READY* THAT THING NEEDS MEDS! I like sprout, its quiet & not really creepy shows. Id probally smack my kid silly if they tried to tell me not to do something!
