Studies Show Bush Responsible For Deficit

August 10, 2012
By

A week ago Thursday, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP), a nonpartisan not-for-profit think tank, found that the wars, spending cuts, and Great Recession of the Bush administration account for nearly all of the budget deficit.

The above graph shows the influence of certain factors on the deficit. Note the virtually nonexistent deficit indicated by the black line toward the bottom of the graph estimating the deficit without those factors.

Another falsity perpetuated by the right-wing propaganda machine is that spending has increased dramatically under Obama. This simply is not true, as indicated by the following:

The CBO (Congressional Budget Office) data can be found here. The Office of Management and Budget also has relevant information and data tables here. Even with the stimulus bill under President Obama, spending is still increasing at the slowest rate since the 1950s.

Obama has not increased spending except by less-than-normal levels, and is not responsible for the deficit. We can thank Bush for that.

So will Obama also be responsible for spending that happens after he leaves office?

At what point does Obama become responsible for anything?

But you just go ahead and keep blaming bush. Maybe we should track back even further and blame Washington.

I do, to an extent...when you have a capital that is more interested in promoting an 'us VERSUS them' mentality, instead of bipartisanship, things tend to go awry when trying to meet in the middle and get things done...especially when you have members of the political machine that love to stymie progress for the sole purpose of saying no because of who introduced a concept...

Did you look at the data? It compares the increase in spending. The large spending Obama does is based on the amount of spending Bush built up to. What Obama didn't do was cut spending down to pre -Bush years... but he did stop the increase. That, when it comes to a federal budget, is pretty hard to do let alone bring it down. Obama is responsible for trying to bring that spending down but he isn't responsible for the initial increase that makes it so difficult (especially with our very effective Congress and Senate).

Bush also had a large act of terrorism & a war break out in his administration. I think its wrong to blame any one person.

I have no problem believing this info since former President Bill Clinton DID balance the budget!
