We get pregnant because we feel that the only form of love has to be physical. Because our daddies or mommies weren’t in our lives. We get pregnant because we thought he was the one. And because when our friends tried to tell us he was bullshitting we wouldn’t believe them. We get pregnant because unprotected sex is the only way to make sure we aren’t second best. We get pregnant because we have low self-esteem and the only confidence that we can seem to muster is from the feeling of slighted appreciation from some dusty ass guy. We get pregnant because we weren’t acknowledging our own sexual health or don’t comprehend the importance of taking care of ourselves inside and out. We get pregnant because we think condoms are whack and we are trying to grow up a little too fast. We get pregnant because living off of someone else’s money (welfare) is more attractive than getting up of our lazy asses to actually apply our able-bodied selves. We get pregnant because we’re lost and it’s a cry for help. We get pregnant because we don’t know no better. And we need someone smart, wiser, and older to help us know better.

We get pregnant because…well…society told us we would. There are statistics to prove it…right?

To some extent these are excuses and truths. But the real question now is what are we going to do about it? Because we need less ME’s running around in the world adding to the statistic.

This is my story. What’s yours?

This is an excerpt.  To read the rest:

I think the OP situation happens often but I think there are many different situations and scenarios.  I think it is preferable that women wait until their mid twenties to have babies but I also don't think women think "hmmm let me see if I can get pregnant so I can life off of welfare".  Women are most influenced by the role modesl in their lives.  It is important for us to be strong role models for our daughters and young women.

I just don't think there is really a reason besides (rape or incest) for a young woman to have an unplanned pregnancy these days. Some may bash this but its a fact that its not hard to get birth control free or at little cost. But the one thing that will teach our daughters, and I have 3 of them, to not have unprotected sex is education and a sense of self worth. We as mothers are responsible for that, its our job to teach them that they will not find the security they may seek from a sexual encounter.

Its difficult to do especially since some women do not have that sense of self worth themselves. I got pregnant at 17...listening to my friends say how great sex was and popped up pregnant the first time. I try to teach my girls that its important to try to look to the future before you act. I hope they take the advice.

I agree with you which is why there is much more to why people have supposedly unplanned pregnancies than simply "bc failed."  No it didn't, because not using any does not = it failed.

Although many of the statements above can be applied to teen pregnancy I believe some girls just want to have sex and have the 'it won't happen to me' mentality that is youth.

It's easy as adult women to look back, hindsight is 20/20, but to ask a 19 year old to make sufficient plans for the long ahead future is ridiculous.

I was active at that age, but never looked at life beyond the moment b/c that failure to see the future is an aspect of youth.

Sorry, that's bs. It may have been that way for you, but try not to paint everyone with the same brush. I made plans for my future at 18. As in, long term. As in, I did not fail to 'see the future'.

Again, it's not the number. It boils down to the individual and their maturity. Many 19 year olds will not be ready for something that carries as much responsibilty as having a family. Some 30 year olds still arent. But, on the other hand- some are.

I agree. I'm not into generalizations b/c we're all very different. Overall most 19 year olds don't look past their nose, but then some do. My statement wasn't meant to cover every facet of humanity and their choices.

I agree with most statements except for the above.

It isn't something to be agreed or disagreed upon, it is reality for some people.

It is, for some, but I don't believe an overwhelming number of 19 year olds think I'm good b/c I can get food stamps.

So we encourage and applaud girls who get preggo at 18 because of their eggs?????

(again w/ the idiocy)

Quoting mikiemom:

It's a matter of the health of the woman's eggs.

Prime time for women to have a healthy baby is between the ages of 18 and 25....

lmao

So how much more dangerous is it to have a baby at 26?

I got pregnant at 19 and here is why. My dad abounded me when I was 8 years old. I grew up without him or his side of the family. My mom had me young so she was more into chasing men than being a parent. So at 19 my mon was off acting like a trashy 16 year old and I felt all alone. So I met a guy and got pregnant. I didn't care if I stayed with that guy or not I just wanted a baby. Someone to love and who would return my love. I was tired of feeling alone and unwanted and like my life meant nothing. After my son was born my world changed. He became my everthing. Oh and I married the guy who got my pregnant and have been together for 7 years now. That's my story.
