Romney calls for Akin to "correct" his statements on rape

Um, this is nice, but he should be doing more than calling for the moron to correct his asinine statements. He should be calling for him to step down from the race. Anything less, IMO, is ridiculous. A man who holds these kinds of beliefs has no business in public office, and clearly he believes this shit. I don't for one minute believe he "misspoke." I think he just slipped and said what he truly believes.

Romney calls Akin’s rape comment ‘insulting’ and ‘inexcusable’

(Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)Mitt Romney called Rep. Todd Akin's suggestion that "legitimate rape" cannot make a woman pregnant "offensive" and "inexcusable."

In an interview with National Review's Robert Costa, the presumptive Republican nominee joined a growing number of GOP officials calling on the congressman to "correct" his statement.

"Congressman's Akin comments on rape are insulting, inexcusable and, frankly, wrong," Romney said. "Like millions of other Americans, we found them to be offensive."

On Sunday, Akin, who is challenging Sen. Claire McCaskill in Missouri's Senate race, claimed in a Missouri television interview a woman's body can block unwanted pregnancy and therefore rape victims should not have access to legal abortions.

"If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut the whole thing down," Akin told KTVI-TV in St. Louis.

The Romney campaign distanced itself from Akin's comments, insisting the GOP nominee did not share the congressman's view. But amid growing pressure on Akin to retract his comments and efforts by Democrats to tie him to the Romney campaign, the presumptive GOP nominee issued a firmer rebuke on Monday.

"I have an entirely different view," Romney told National Review. "What he said is entirely without merit, and he should correct it."

If everyone stepped down who "misspoke"   there would be very few left in D.C.  How about Biden and his chains comment?

True. But I don't consider this just plain misspeaking. The man clearly believes what he's saying, which is scary. Unless I missed something in health class, a woman cannot decide to turn away sperm if she's ovulating.

As for Biden, he is an idiot. I lost a lot of respect for Obama when he chose him for his running mate. He'd have fared much better with Hillary for his VP.

How can women trust what he says regarding anything about abortion  He has taken so many different views I can't keep up ,  Ryan co signed a bill with Akins regarding the subject of rape, and he is also signed the personhood amendment  Why on earth would someone who's views are so very different from yours be put on the ticket  .  Romney makes no sense at all.

I don't want to guess whether he believed what he was saying or not.  Hasn't he apologized?

If you could call it that. He didn't actually say he was sorry for saying it, just that he meant to say "forced" rape instead of legitimate rape. His apology doesn't really correct the mistake in his thought process. He's still saying women can control whether they get pregnant during rape, he's just now calling it "forced" rape instead of legitimate rape.

Maybe Romney should talk to Ryan, who co-sponsored a bill with Akin to redefine rape as "forcible rape" for the purpose of limiting Medicaid-funded abortions. If his views on rape and abortion are so different, why did he pick Ryan? This is sheer hypocrisy, buying the support of Tea Party extremists while disavowing their agenda.

But it does dovetail nicely with the hypocrisy of the TP's two conflicting talking points: "Go Away Big Government! But Let Me Legislatively Peek Into Your Uterus."

Mispoke ?? he didn't mispeak, his 60 something white male ass decided that women don't get pregnant if they are forced to have sex. He must not have any children.

I found the "legitimate rape" comment quite telling.

I suspect that he believes that if the woman gets pregnant, she really wanted it. I know far too many of that type of older man, the ones who really do believe that women invite rape.

The only "misstatement" there was that he actually said what he believes in public. Oops.
