Why Are People Saying Romney Won The Debate?

Posted by   + Show Post
He couldn't answer a single question, couldn't give any details...he just blew hot air over and over about Obama's policies without explaining how his would work better, even when given the opportunity. All I heard was "cut PBS", "repeal Obamacare", constant interruptions and politely telling Jim Lehrer to shut up. This wins the debate???

November 6 will be very telling, won't it?

Quoting stacymomof2:

This is like the opposite of reality.  I saw Obama trying to follow the debate rule and get away from zingers and rhetoric to start talking about his ACTUAL plans.  Romney was interrupting the moderator, repeatedly spouting off his vague "plans" (that will be solved by congress...you KNOW how good the congress is about solving problems and passing reasonable tax laws and spending cuts, right?)

And  no matter how specific and knowledgeable Obama is, no matter how respectfully he follows the debate format, how he focused his time on presenting HIS information, you call HIM a thug.  And Romney with his interruptions, stupid coy answer reducing PBS to "Big Bird," and shallow criticism of the current administration, he is somehow a level "above."  LMAO

Are you fucking serious, the "gutter?"  That's pretty bad, candle.  With all of the REAL criticisms you could make about Obama you go that route?  Just fyi, that's why the Republicans will lose this year.

Quoting candlegal:

Obama gave it to him, lol

Obama didn't have his teleprompter to tell him what to say, that was his problem.   I am pretty sure Mitt doesn't want to be on his level, his level starts in the gutter, just a thug from Chicago, that is all he will ever be no matter how you dress him up.

Quoting vonna610:

clappingObama gave this one to him to make Romney feel like he's on his level its all about how you finish. Romney said all the he could in this first debate. he still didnt say anything about how he would fix things.

I was about a year and a half old during the '84 debates. lol The first debates I recall were those between Bush and Dukakis in '88.

I look forward to the foreign policy debate, though I'm sure Romney will try to seize upon Lybia, and claim Obama hasn't appeased Israel enough.

If Romney wins, we'll be at war with Iran within 12 months. It'll be Korea/Vietnam/Iraq all over again. He's a chickenhawk.

Quoting stacymomof2:

Yes, well the foreign policy debate should be pretty enlightening.

Obama isn't going to present anything new at a domestic policy debate, no way.  He's been campaigning on his plan for months.

I thought he kind of stumbled or hesitated when he talked about "corporate tax cuts.  It was either not true or he is forcing himself to agree with it in order to get other stuff passed.  He almost visibly flinched when he said that.

And that's too bad, actually.  He should stand behind it.  Although that is no way to win an election.  Remember Mondale in the debates in 1984?  (probably not, I know everyone in this group is younger than me, lol)He was like, "well yeah, I'm going to raise taxes.  We have to!  There is no way around it."  lol that didn't work out very well, now did it.  Even though Reagan said he wouldn't raise taxes and actually did.  People prefer to hear lies over a legitimate discussion, it seems.

Quoting radioheid:

I don't think either Obama or Romney "won" the debate. Obama bored me, and Romney annoyed me. Obama didn't offer anything new or insightful, and Romney both lied and offered a tax plan that simply isn't mathematically possible.

And people wonder why I'm voting for Gary Johnson...

*sigh*

Well...there's still two more debates. Maybe one of them will sell me a good deal before I reach the poll.

Quoting stacymomof2:

I thought Obama just let too much by.  He was staying unaggressive and stuck to specfic (read:boring) arguments about how his plans will actually work.

Obama seemed to let Romney just talk his usual rhetoric and tried to address the questions with his actual plans without delving too far into campaigning.

Too bad that "winning" in a debate has less to do with information and more to do with who gets out the most soundbites.  But really, I was kind of surprised that he let so much of the Romney shallow rhetoric by.  Maybe he was trying to get all his info out within the time frame and decided it was more important to get his info accross than trying to tell Romney why he was wrong.  He almost seemed to kind of ignore Romney.

Didn't people have this same criticism of Obama in the 2008 debates?  I think I remember something about that.

I thought about that for a minute, too...I watch the PBS discussion after the debate and all of the people on the panel said that Romney "won" the debate.  I thought that was pretty funny...isn't PBS the bastion of socialism, government obedience and liberal spin?  lol

Quoting Moniker:

Slow down a minute....you mean the liberal media announced Romney the winner?? How can that be?

Hence the reason every Republican since Reagan has wanted to ax it.

Maybe they are worried about getting axed when Romney wins.

My point is, is that it ISN'T.  If you watch their news it is absolutely neutral, no editorial.  If you watch their panels they are balanced and respectful.  Thus how a pbs panel was able to conclude that Romney got the better of Obama in this debate.  If they were so slanted they would say Obama won.

PBS gets like 500 million from the government.  15% of it's operating costs.  They would still be around.
