UN says access to contraception a human right

GENEVA (AP) — The United Nations says access to contraception is a universal human right that could dramatically improve the lives of women and children in poor countries.

It is the first time the U.N. Population Fund's annual report explicitly describes family planning as a human right.

It effectively declares that legal, cultural and financial barriers to accessing contraception and other family planning measures are an infringement of women's rights.

The report released Wednesday isn't binding and has no legal effect on national laws.

The global body also says increasing funding for family planning by a further $4.1 billion could save $11.3 billion annually in health bills for mothers and newborns in poor countries.

The U.N. doesn't count abortion among the measures.

I agree.

Wait on the UN to pay for yours.

Others in this country shouldn't have to.

Of course it is! Makes sense to me.

Can't wait for the radical right to fly in and badmouth the UN. :-)

I have to agree with the UN on this.  Imagine how many abortions would be prevented if we all had access to affordable birth control.

I think the UN is utterly worthless, however, I agree with this comment.   along with contraception comes education.   Until women and young girls understand biology and the importance of using contraception correctly, it won't matter.   HOw many women can't even remember to take a BC pill each day?  their comments "it is too hard to remember"...yet if you don't you may wind up with a baby, which is SOO easy.

Do you think before you type? Ever? I'm not a person who thinks ALL women should get free birth control, I PAY for health insurance to help cover my necessities as a woman. I'm not asking for it to be free for me, but I kind of already pay for it. Now, let's talk about women who truly cannot afford birth control...why wouldn't you want us to cover preventative measures to ensure that our society isn't burdened with more unwanted children or ensure that we don't have to pay even more for public assistance? Which do you think costs more in the long run?
