CA Implements Cap and Trade Tomorrow

Beginning Wednesday, the state of California will implement a “cap and trade” system designed to curb carbon emissions and cripple the state’s economy. Well, actually, it’s just designed to curb carbon emissions. Crippling the state economy is merely a nifty byproduct.

Now the Chamber of Commerce is suing the state, saying that the carbon trading system isn’t really a trading system – it’s a tax, unconstitutional under state law. Of course, they’re correct. The state claims that the cap and trade system, which regulates how much companies can emit unless they pay the state extra cash – sort of like environmental indulgences – is just a big regulatory fee. Except that the state creates the necessity for the auction, and punishes you if you don’t take part. The state is looking to raise some $500 million to $1 billion. Which will pay for the union employees across the state for a few weeks.

About 600 companies fall under cap and trade. Companies will spend millions to comply. And they’ll lay off employees, involuting the economy and destroying the tax base. Well done, Jerry Brown!

We moved from CA our home because they are taxing us to death and the environmentalist  are making it hard to have any kind of business.

i know of one steak place that their business went way down because of a stupid tiny fish. People lost  their job for freaking fish how stupid s that!

I guess its ok if people suffer?

I am big on protecting the environment but there is a smart and safe way to do things.  Cap and Trade is not one.

Maybe if they ever pay their hydro-electric bill to Canada they'll be something other than broke...

If they'd just legalize pot 100% - rather than just medicinally - it would help their economy immensely.  that's why our gov. is meeting with the Feds to make it work in WA.

I don't support cap&trade but I'm sure you and many other Republicans are hoping and praying for Cali to fail or fall into the ocean, maybe both.

I forgot his name but one of the guys behind the legislation in Wa was on Bill Maher last week and promised to come to Cali to help us draft some good legislation and of course Maher will contribute some cash.

The nonpartisan state budget analyst just announced today that California's budget deficit has shrunk, from nearly 16 billion in a forecast earlier this year, to 1.9 billion for the rest of the fiscal year. And he's talking about surpluses starting in 2014.

The Cap and Trade program was passed long before Jerry Brown was elected governor, also. AB32 was passed in 2006. Brown was mayor of Oakland then.

The lawsuit filed by the California Chamber says the Air Resources Board doesn't have the authority to sell the permits. They do call it a tax, yes. It will be up to a court to decide whether they're right. In the meantime, the auction did go on today. Results are to be announced next week.

I'm sure the OP will be disappointed to learn this.

I'm sure as well. The GOP, in general, hates Cali. They tried to gain some power with the recall, Issa was behind that BS and was pissed when the Governator beat him out. They seem to figure if they can't run us they will just pray we go under...whether financially or the big one.
