Florida man heads to bar, leaves 10-month-old baby with pit bull as a babysitter

PALM COAST, Fla. (AP) -- A Florida man is charged with child neglect after allegedly leaving his 10-month-old baby in the care of his pit bull while he went to a bar.

The Flagler County Sheriff's Office says 41-year-old James Irvine of Palm Coast was arrested early Saturday.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports the child's mother called police after learning Irvine left the baby alone while he went out to drink on Nov. 30. She was at work at the time. She called Irvine several times while at work and got no answer, except when he picked up once to say "I'm watching the game" and hung up.

A police report says she returned home to find him trying to get into the house through the garage. He told her he didn't leave the baby home alone because the "pit bull was watching the baby."

The child was in his bedroom with the door shut. The baby was crying and had a dirty diaper. A deputy reported the dog was sitting outside the room.

Irvine told police he had been home on the couch "all day and night watching TV." When police visited a nearby bar, a bartender positively identified Irvine and said he left after drinking six beers and was supposed to return to pay his $23.50 bar tab.

It's not known whether Irvine has an attorney. He's out on a $1,500 bond.Florida man heads to bar, leaves 10-month-old baby with pit bull as a babysitter
