Is your school district allowing excused absences for the Mayan Apocolypse? ****UPDATE****

I almost fell over when I got a robo call from the school yesterday evening.  Apparently, the schools have been getting a number of calls wondering about the impending apocolypse.  The district has decided parents may use their discretion and an absence will be excused.

They are also excusing absences for the rest of the week for the SHE school shootings.

It was just sort of a head scratcher for me.  So I wondered if any other districts are doing this?

UPDATE....I found out why they are doing this.  The district has shut down 2 suicide pacts at 2 different high schools and they investigated a credible threat to 1 of the junior highs.  Parents were calling in with concerns about the crazy people believing an apocolypse is going to happen.  The district decided in light of the threats to allow parents to keep their kids at home and excuse the absence....under the inclement weather (ie ...I'm the parent and I decide) rule.

IDK.

I can not imagine anyone calling the school and asking the question re 12/21.

Just call and say your kid has a fever-

GL- there has to be a parallel universe.

It is even on our district website.

LCSD1 UPDATE - December 18, 2012 11:30AM
  • There are a number of rumors circulating around the nation at this time involving an alleged threat of a school shooting as well as rumors involving the Mayan calendar and the end of the world.  School district and law enforcement officials have been monitoring these rumors as they relate to our community and have found them to be unsubstantiated. There is a heightened awareness in our District and we are following up with any and all information that is received.
  • We appreciate all the calls and as always, please forward any information and rumors about potential danger directly to police or an administrator at your child’s school.
  • Parents have been asking questions about excused absences in these situations. School officials have been asked to handle absences the same way they handle inclement weather decisions. Parents may make their own decisions regarding student attendance.
  • School will be in session as scheduled throughout the week.

I think it's nice they are attentive to those who are anxious about this week, both with the shooting and impending doom (lol) Friday. No, my school hasn't mentioned it at all.
