Would you tell your doctor that....

Posted by   + Show Post

...you own guns, if you were asked?    Apparently, doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals are being trained to ask patients if they own guns and if so, do they also have young children or peopel in the househld that are mentally ill.  Now in theory, this sounds like a good idea, but what will they do with that information?  Give it to the police, child services, ????    Will the gun owners be placed on some type of watch list?    I honestly think if my health care provider asked me this question, I would not answer it.

What you say if youi doctor asked if you had a gun in the house plus young children??

It's none of their business, I wouldn't answer the question.

If it's not a personal health issue then why would a medical doctor ask that?  And why should I be compelled to answer him?

Quoting motha2daDuchess:

lol, yup, I work in healthcare and I know that saying anything about whether or not you own a gun is not a personal health issue.....

Quoting Imacakebaker:

HIPAA: Acronym that stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, a US law designed to provide privacy standards to protect patients' medical records and other health information provided to health plans, doctors, hospitals and other health care providers. Developed by the Department of Health and Human Services, these new standards provide patients with access to their medical records and more control over how their personal health information is used and disclosed. They represent a uniform, federal floor of privacy protections for consumers across the country. State laws providing additional protections to consumers are not affected by this new rule. HIPAA took effect on April 14, 2003.

Do you understand HIPPA??

Quoting motha2daDuchess:

so you dont know what hipaa is ok

Quoting Imacakebaker:

What I discuss with my doctor is between me and my doctor.  Not me, my doctor and our out of control government!!

Quoting motha2daDuchess:

wtfh...how is guns a hipaa violation

Quoting Imacakebaker:

Since Obama is now proposing violating HIPPA laws.. no way.

At this point I wouldn't seek help if I was feeling depressed or was having anxiety attacks either.  I do not want to be on list because the President invoked an executive order violating my personal rights.

But this isn't just about pediatricians, it's about all docs. Smoking is a health issue. Whether or not I own a gun is not my doctors business. FYI, I have never in all of my life been asked how old my house is by my dr.

Quoting UpSheRises:

Same reason they ask if you smoke and how old your home is.

They ask for that information because it related to the physical health and safety of your child. Based an your answer they can provide you with resources or consultation depending on your families needs.

Nobody is out to get you.

I don't and won't answer that question as it has nothing whatsoever to do with our medical care.

I would say that everyone in my home is safe and we follow the laws. Period.

Now, can we discuss why i am here? Lol

The question of how old your house is, is because of fear of lead paint.  They don't suspect adults of going around putting everything in their mouths, like paint chips, or licking windowsills, etc.

My kids are 17 and 20 and I have never been asked that by the ped, the ER doc, ear/nose/throat, dentist/eye dr, ortho, etc.

Quoting annelauer:

They have been asking this for decades. It was on my doctor's paperwork when I was a kid. Must of the time they don't do anything with it really. If a minor of a parent with guns was thought to be suicidal, it would be nice for said parents to have extra warning. The parents who refuse to answer are likely whack jobs who don't give a crap though, so it wouldn't do much good even if they did answer.

Why would you get in trouble with your doctor if its just a personal private safety question along the same lines as do you wear seatbelts and if it were staying with your doctor and no one else? Who would find out you were lying? WHo is going to do something to you if you do lie? That is what scares me. Whatever I tell MY doc should stay with MY doc

Quoting lga1965:

I am kind of alarmed at the number of moms who say they won't tell a Doctor the TRUTH about whether or not they own guns! Makes me wonder if they have something to hide? And if they are caught lying about owning a gun...what then?

See, this is one of the reasons I think there is somethng wrong with the way many gun owners think. Deceitful, paranoid, sneaky are the words that come to mind.....

I know why they would ask about homes, I'm really not dumb. I simply said I was never asked that. I took my 2 children to the doctor for all of their lives and I was never asked how hold my house is. Therefore, never in my life was I asked how old my home was.
