Sheriff blasts "adolescent confrontation" and "stupidity" in Tuesday shooting
  • A 22-year-old man has been charged with aggravated assault
  • Investigators are still looking for the gun used in the shooting

(CNN) -- The exact subject of the argument that led to a shooting at a Houston-area community college hadn't been determined Wednesday, but Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia said he had a general idea of the cause.

"Idiocy. Stupidity," Garcia told reporters. "We had individuals who did not care about putting other people in harm's way. It was a ridiculous, adolescent confrontation that occurred. But if we can make an example out of anyone, we will."

Pressed for details, Garcia added, "We're still clearing that up. But a confrontation occurred, and somebody thought, in their peanut-sized brain, that maybe a firearm on a campus would be the way to settle it."

Garcia's blunt assessment came a day after three people were wounded at Lone Star College. One of those shot, 22-year-old Carlton Berry, has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault and remains under guard at a hospital, Garcia said. The other two were still hospitalized as well, he said.

Investigators are still trying to determine whether a second suspect was involved, Garcia said. And he appealed to the public for help in trying to find the weapon used in Tuesday's shooting, which sent hundreds of students running from the suburban campus and swarms of sheriff's deputies, police and firefighters rushing to the scene.

The shooting happened roughly a month after the massacre at a Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school that left 26 dead, including 20 children ages 6 and 7. Garcia said that the situation in Houston "was nothing like" the Newtown killings.

Actually, I clearly do.

Quoting NWP:

Ugh...You very clearly do not understand the powder keg you wish to release upon our children.

We will NOT agree on this, you and I. We will need to agree to disagree.

Quoting talia-mom:

You clearly do not understand people who conceal carry.

Quoting Bella_Madre:

I didn't say it would change the shooting. But I think it's clear that the LAST thing we need is even more idiots on campuses with guns.

Quoting talia-mom:

How would the guns being legal have changed the shooting?   It was already illegal to carry them on the campus.

Quoting Bella_Madre:

Meanwhile Texas presses for a law that makes guns on campus perfectly legal.....have I mentioned that I really hate this state?....

Out of everyone I know that conceal carries, including myself, my husband, and my brothers, not to mention most of our friends, not a single one has ever pulled out the gun because they were upset.

You are trained to know when and where to use it.    Millions of people carry everyday and they never just randomly decide to shoot people.

Quoting Sisteract:

The problem, it seems, is that all the gun enthusiasts do not understand and respect each other.... gun owner/carrier shooting gun owner/carrier- connect the dots.

Having more gun owners and carriers will decrease gun violence how?

Common sense.

Yanno woody, i love ya but the problem is, guns + US schools appears to be a more common issue.  Anyone bringing a gun to school AND using it SHOULD be something "blown up" by the media. It should not have that "yawn" attitude that appears to be cropping up by alot of people where it has to apparently fit some sort of criteria before its newsworthy to them.  I dunno, there appears to be a level of acceptance and complacency that is just..unnerving.

Quoting Woodbabe:

Yes it WAS stupid. Even worse was the news media blowing it out of proportion, so fast.

Quoting NWP:

But that is because there are only 8 people that live in the state of Wyoming< Some inflated serious hyperbole here:)

Quoting yourspecialkid:

I like this sheriff!  Too bad he can't decide the punshiment for the peanut brain.

Allowing guns on campus is not going to result in a wild west shootout.  If this logic were true those legal carrying would be having shootouts everywhere else...and they aren't.

There is a lot of open carry here in Wyoming...it is even legal in our legislative buildings.  There aren't a bunch of shootouts...and we kind of are the wild west.

Actually, here in the city of Cheyenne we have a population of about 60,000 in the city proper and another 10,000 in the outlying areas.  This is certainly large enough to be significant and to make my assertion valid.

There is a good bit of open carry and the state does not require a permit for concealed carry......yet no shootouts.

Why, it would have added more shooters to the wild west show, dontcha know! Texas gun nuts never pass up an opportunity to shoot up something if they think they can get away with it! They just LUUUUVVV killing things. Never mind that most can't shoot straight and would have added to the carnage. That just makes it more fun!

You know I was just pulling your leg about the 8 people...That is in North Dakota. Wyoming actually has 10:)

What's unnerving is the selective shootings picked up by the media and used for political purpose. Recently I posted links showing that between 30-60 people were shot and killed every weekend this past summer in Chicago but it wasn't worth panic and the need for new gun laws because it was only gang related. Crazy people have been using guns to kill massive amounts of people over the years, but no one cares until its upper middle class kids. THEN suddenly it hits home, strikes a nerve, and makes lawmakers sit up at feel the need to do something about it.

Well, the facts would tell you that not everyone has the same restraint that you and yours display- if that premise were true, we would not be discussing this issue.

Actually, the facts do show that people legally able to carry don't do these shootings.   That gun wasn't legally able to be carried where it was.   That is the problem.   People who don't obey the laws, not owning and carrying a gun.
