Iowa GOP Bill Defines Abortion As Murder, No Exception For Life Of The Mother

Iowa Republicans are doing what Republicans do best: attacking the rights of women.

On Wednesday, State Sen. Rob Bacon (R-Scrambled Eggs) and eight very serious Republicans introduced a bill that would address one of the most pressing concerns facing Iowans. No, not job creation or Climate Change or the fragile housing market. No. They’ve taken up the task of redefining murder. According to the Ames Tribune, the bill would “alter the definition of a person in murder cases to “an individual human being, without regard to age of development, from the moment of conception, when a zygote is formed, until natural death.”

Why?

“It’s to protect the life of the unborn,” Bacon told the Tribune. “There’s still some of us that believe life begins at conception.”

This would make the constitutionally protected right of a woman to terminate a pregnancy illegal. Hormonal birth control that would interfere with the implantation of a fertilized egg would naturally be illegal as well. Bacon and his fellow Republicans, seven of which are, unsurprisingly, men and one, Sandy Salmon, who is conveniently past her child bearing years, are well aware that their bill has no chance of passing but that wasn’t the point:

“I’ve felt long and hard after the last election that we need to change our message. Within our party, we’re going to differ on social issues. One of them is the right to life. There are some who say that we need to ease up on this because it’s not winning us anything. My thought is we can’t let this drop. Even if I’m in here screaming to empty walls, I will always be a voice for the unborn.”

I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen the modern Republican Party summed up better than that: “Screaming at empty walls.”

It’s good to see that the GOP is taking the right lessons from the 2012 bloodbath election. The American people just haven’t had enough of the right wing culture war so it only makes sense to go as far to the right as possible. Don’t stop now, Republicans! You’ve got 2014 in the bag!

If their constituents don't like then they should tell them unless you live in Iowa (which it's unlikely it would pass like this) then it's not up to you.

Thank god stupid people are showing themselves above the Mason Dixon line so the world can see we did not corner the market on being as dumb as a box of rocks and with less insight and empathy.

It will never pass. Just because I can't take it seriously doesn't make it less reprehensible.

They need to stop eating the GM corn out there in Iowa. It's fucking with their rational thought processes.

This will not pass.

The good side of this, it brings to light those of which should be deemed noteworthy in the future.

It is a waste of legislative time and money, so they should be censured by their colleagues.

Oh how stupid. If you're pro-life that's great and wonderful, but when you throw out that women can't terminate to save her life, you've lost your damn mind.
