Pediatricians Oppose School Suspension and Expulsion

It's about time. The AAP says sending  kids home for wrong-doing can have serious consequences. Personally, I think suspension is overused these days. Schools can send kids home for wearing the wrong tee-shirt. Save for the serious stuff.

I agree.  Unless they are a danger to other kids for some reason they should give the kids ISS (We called it that...In School Suspension) where you have to sit and do homework and not talk, not go to lunch, miss out on all the fun stuff.  That is way more of a deterrent to a 15 year old rather than going home to play videogames or get into even more trouble.

I agree that suspensions are being overused for the wrong things.

I agree.  However, I have heard some say that this would require an extra teacher, an extra body, to cover those classes.  Also, that the responsibility falls on to the parents when a child misbehaves.  They should be sent home and the parents should deal with their child.

How about make the parent come to school and sit with the kid? I'll bet they stay in line after that,.

We have inhouse school suspensions...the made the classrooms with large full length windows...that overlook the admin area.  These kids arent taught...they are given a book to write out.  If they play up they are sent to a single cubicle that again has a glass door.  If they get physical the parents are called and the child is given an extra week on top of their original suspension (usually 2 or 3 days)

Our inhouse suspension went from the first month of being full...to now lying almost empty.  It was certainly a deterent...and no extra staff.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

I love it....my oldest kids didnt have this and two had been on suspension ....shitted me off.  We both worked (they were 14 and 16 at the time) and I KNEW they were lounging around home watching tv and having a friggin ball....the best I could do was kick their arses out of bed at 5.30am and give them a chore list that they had to do...but knew they would have hours of nothing.  Now if my kids want to go down that route....well they at least know what they are in for :-)

I agree. It is very detrimental to children especially those who probably have a learning disorder that is being misdiagnosed as a behavior disorder. A child shows out for attention and to distract from what is actually going on or due to anxiety.

I agree with them 100%, these kids need school, expelling them only sets them up for failure.

That's an illogical solution.
