I know with all the weather systems and such that it might be a far thought from some minds about planting a garden and the like.

Do you plan on planting a garden this year or making other changes to be more self sufficient?

Not sure,we tried last year, tomato, cherry tomato, green peppers and egg plant. I got three eggplants, ten cherry tomatoes and maybe 3 normal tomatoes. My peppers did not take at all. I tried both in ground and containers. My neighbor is an avid planter she did not get much either.

Last year did not go well for me either. I have hope for this year.

It is a lot of work, but then again, my kids will go outside, pick a tomato and eat it.   I can't ask for anything better than that.

I spend between 3-5 hours a day between weeding, picking, moving the drip lines, once it really gets started and then I have friends come help me with the canning in exchange for some goodies.   But they bring some of their stuff too, so we all get different things.

That's great! And a lot of work!

Quoting talia-mom:

I grow enough to supply my parents during the spring and summer as well as us.  Then I spend a great deal of time canning it or I use a lot it for my catering jobs during the spring.   The tomatoes are really useful for wedding dinners.

Quoting IhaveHisjoy:

Wow, your garden has it going on! Impressive!

Quoting talia-mom:

Tomatoes, lettuce, Swissh chard, eggplant, zucchini, yellow squash, butternut squash, canteloupe, watermelon, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, asparagus is already coming up, potatoes, green beans, corn, and various herbs.

Growing up my parents and all the neighbors had gardens. I so remember all us little kids running all over and when we got hungry it was pretty common for us to just go to the nearest garden and grab some carrot, asparagus, berries or other fresh goody to eat.

I have tried planting a garden but I always fail at it so I am not going to try again.

It's OK.  I may try some herbs in pots once I get my patio out my back door done.

We have too many deer to plant much of anything. We do have tomatoes in pots but they are not as good.

DH did build a nice stone garden and I plan to plant some ferns and then a few annuals in between- gesh- I hope deer don';t like ferns.
