EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Evansville Police say a local couple is arrested on neglect charges after leaving their young children alone in a vehicle in Downtown Evansville while they went to court.

Police say around 8 a.m. Wednesday morning someone had called Evansville dispatch after walking by a vehicle in the rear parking lot of the Civic Center and hearing a child crying inside.

EPD says when officers arrived on scene they found inside the vehicle three young children, ages 3, 23 months and 7 months.

Police say the vehicle was locked, but one of the back windows had only tape covering it. EPD says the officers removed the covering and unlocked the vehicle. The officers say temperature inside the vehicle was about 45 degrees.

An officer then asked the 3-year-old boy where his parents were, "Chase told me to put a bottle in her mouth when she cries," the boy replied to the officer, referring to the 7-month-old who was in a car seat between the other two children.

EPD says Child Protective Service was then called to the scene to take custody of the children.

Officers ran the plates of the vehicle and found that it was registered to Chase Mattingly, who they say was in Misdemeanor Court at the time of the incident.

Police say they contacted the Vanderburgh Co. Sheriff's Office who then escorted Chase to the waiting EPD officers.

Authorities say Chase's wife, Cammie Mattingly, was found and escorted to the EPD officers a short time later.

EPD says they were arrested and taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail. They are each charged with three counts of Child Neglect, a Class D felony.

Court says no children allowed in the courtroom. That is all they say and child care isn't free or offered. This used to happen so often it wasn't against the law

Then leave them with the paralegal! I'm sorry- that is a poor excuse for abuse and neglect. and it's not like this is their first time involved with the law- they were in court for a prior charge. Those parents don;t have the best track record and won't be winning Best parent awards anytime soon.

Most people have family members who can baby sit or at least friends who can.

As I said, 45F is about +7C, that is not cold, and I wouldn't wear a coat either. A light sweater or hoodie maybe, but definitely not a coat.

Quoting lga1965:

where do you think Minnesota is,anyway? Down south? LOL. We have below zero temps in the winter but I still won't go out without a coat when it's 45.  You're full of BS

Quoting AjsMom0508:

I live in Michigan. 45 degrees here is no coat weather unless it's windy. I know a lot of people who wear shorts in that weather. I'm not saying that they were right in what they did. It was extremely stupid but those kids were not going to freeze to death.

45 in Indiana is not cold. Those kids shouldn't have been left in the car alone but I laugh at the part about it being cold.

I live in Minnesota and I think 45 degrees is cold, and these are little kids, in a cold car!  The parents are totally irresponsible. And the Mom is still with a jerk like him who has a court date and someone said this isn't the first one?

Losers.

While the weather this way is different, I agree that 45 decrees is not cold enough to freeze.  At this point, I would welcome that temp as I would not need to leave the house with a coat.

While they were in court? How stupid can you be? I mean stupid to leave children in a car, but that just takes the cake. I'm glad someone found them.

Lol I was gonna say here in ND 45is t shirt weather. Ha where I lived for 2yrs was winter weather. But no matter the temp that's inexcusable.

Quoting tambrathegreat:

It does depend on where you live.  In my state, Oklahoma, 45 would be considered COLD.  In MN, where my friend lives, that would be a nice spring day.

Either way, these parents are too stupid to be allowed to continue breeding/child raising.

Quoting canadianmom1974:

Wow, just ... wow! What were they thinking? Obviously they weren't.

I will say though, 45 is like +7, that's not cold. Cool, yes, but not cold. Though I guess it may be a matter of perspective.

Who cares if it was cold or not. Three underage children were left alone in a car. I find that repulsive enough.

This shit would have to happen in my hometown wouldn't it!!! Poor kids.

The kids should be taken away from parents like that.  As far as the temp., I'm freezing when it's under 70.  Under 60, I would feel like crying.  Then, anything under that I believe I would be an ice-cube.  But, seriously it doesn't matter.  Parents that do that even once, I'm sorry but they don't deserve to have a 2nd chance. imo.  Not to mention that they were in trouble with the law more than twice already.  Poor children :(

Quoting canadianmom1974:

Exactly, I'm not excusing these people. They were so wrong leaving three babies alone at all. I just found it funny that they called that temp 'cold', I can't wait until it gets that warm here - another month or so probably.

Quoting Ms.KitKat:

exactly- 45 is "chilly" by me but with a coat it's fine. The fact they were left alone is cause for CPS involvement. Those poor babies. No 3 yo child should be responsible for a toddler and an infant.

Quoting canadianmom1974:

I was just commenting on how what is considered cold is subjective. But those kids should not have been left alone.

I would (and am) more concerned that babies were left in the car. period. and for Court no less!

and even if one does not have social supports ( I know I did not when my children were small and finding a babysitter was very difficult) but still, I can not stand when someone comes along and stays- Children were not allowed. It's a poor excuse for negligent behaviour. At least in my book.
