army and marines suspend tuition assistance programs; air force and navy likely to follow

Posted by   + Show Post
The army and marines have suspended their ta programs effective Friday evening. The air force and navy will likely follow suit this week.
The DoD put pressure on all branches of service to trim the fat, one program encouraged to be cut was ta programs for service members.

Gi bills can still be used, however.

2 moms liked this
They may not have ever had to deal with it themselves, but they know what they are doing is going to affect people greatly. They just don't give a shit, because we are all pawns in their political game. Political gain is more important than the people they represent.

Quoting anikahaynes1:

Omg!!! That is seriously terrible!!! :(( I'm so sorry!!! Stupid government!! They really don't get it at all how this hurts people!!!

Quoting DestinyHLewis:

Yep. Now imagine all of a sudden paying a $5000.oo a year family deductible $489.00 a month premium. $45.00 copay for an office visit per person for a regular dr 65.00 for a specialist like a psychologist or Ear Nose and Throat. Each time you have to go. Medications like amoxicillin have gone from $10 to $30.00, one I take monthly for a genetic disorder I have, went from covered to non preferred in their formulary and I had to fight tooth and nail for it. Now I have to pay $99 a month for a 30 supply for generic instead of $30. They pay only 10%.

We had almost no warning for this. As soon as the Supreme Court ruled on Obama care we got packets in the mail saying we had to choose from a list of new plans and this was the cheapest. My DH was still in Afghanisthan when it came and we had 30 days to choose and mail it in. We didn't have a deductible at all before this and our premium was $250/month. Now you know why I wanted to go back to Tricare. I am praying that UHC through the AF reserve will be about the same as Tricare.Lord knows it can't be as bad as what we are paying now.

Quoting anikahaynes1:

Oh man that sucks!!! :( I know the stress of feeling overwhelmed by insurance not picking up the cost. We were shortly on tricare standard and every bill that came my jaw dropped!! I'm so thankful to be back on prime and living in post right now. I looked up uhc taking over tricare, guess for now it's only the west region? So we won't have that to deal with for now. But yeah costs have gone up. I just paid 10$ out of pocket for amoxicillin at Walmart on Friday night instead if the usual 3-4$ co pay. UHG.

Quoting DestinyHLewis:

Lol don't count on it. Health care is going down the tubes. I currently have UHC through my husband civilian employer. I hate them so much I actually want TriCare back and I never expected to hear those words come out of my mouth. It all depends on what deal they worked out with the DOD for our benefits. I grew up military under Champus, and the coverage was awesome. They switched to Tricare when I was in Highschool and things started to go downhill and kept going downhill. I got married and traded my Dependant ID from my dad for my dh's and he was active duty AF for 13 years. He then went active reserve and then drilling reserve with a civilian full time job as we are now. His job offered what seemed like a better plan under UHC than TriCare did under our benefits with TriCare reserve select. We were about to switch back when we found out UHC was taking over. I am waiting to see what the new plans will be before we decide to switch or not. Our premiums have gone through the roof, our copays have doubled, medications costs, everything since you know what has gone into effect. It sucks. Guess we will have to wait and see what happens. Ugh.

Quoting anikahaynes1:

Oh guess I didn't realize. We've been together total 10 years it's been tricare as long as I can remember. It's so sad that these companies only care about the money they know they'll get paid instead of patient care. :-/ however I haven't been totally happy with tricare so maybe they'll care more? :-/

Quoting DestinyHLewis:

It's just like when TriCare replaced Champus. They have gone with UHC to replace Tricare. It's just a new contract provider it happens all the time. You know how it goes. The money goes to the lowest bidder.

Quoting anikahaynes1:

What?! So tricare won't exsist anymore? I haven't heard of this and we've been married 8 years.

Quoting DestinyHLewis:

UHC will be our new provider. I believe that starts in the new Fiscal year this October. Not sure but I think that is correct. I am positive on the new contractor just not sure of the start date.

Quoting Binkys_Buttons:

They should start with the accounts payable dept. I work for a large medical supply company in the dept that posts the monies that come with eob. I hate tricare/west. Least helpful people ever.

Tricare, the healthcare service provider for vets, and military and their families was not protected and also could be facing cuts in the coming weeks

DH is supposed to be getting forced into recruiting in the next several months.... I hate to see how negatively this will affect the recruiting quotas when all those men and women decide it isn't worth joining if they can't get the education they desire. It is going to make a lot of people's lives harder... Especially if they can't get a pell grant or scholarship OR use their GI Bill.

This is all political theater and it's just wrong on every level.

Meanwhile, they sure found the billions to bail out the "too big to fail" banks and car companies back in the Great Recession a few years ago.

The GI bill is protected under the VA so they cannot slash those, however it typicaly isn't useful for servicemembers to use their GI bills while on active duty because you only get it for x amount of months. People typically use TA to take a class or two in between deployments and then save their GI bill for later use.

However single servicemembers will likely not qualify fo income based aid.

I know that cuts need to be mad to try and balance the budget but it is not right to cut any portion of Tricare. These cuts could and most likely will hit the retires and their spouses that have no other medical care. My 93 yr old Grandfather served in the Navy durning WWII and is a Pearl Harbor survivor and after WWII joined the Air Force and did 20+ years there. His generation of military retires do not get social security/medicare unless they got a job after getting out worked long enough to be able to claim it. This is not how we should be treating those that sacrificed so much and seen things that most could not have handled at all.

I've heard it is difficult to even get the GI Bill benefits for school unless you are retired. I don't know how true that is. It's all in all a sad thing to see go.

But only for the West Region.

North & South will remain Tricare.

(Which I think is odd)
