A father's touching letter accepting his homosexual son has gone viral.

Nate's coming out conversation was preempted by his father, who wrote a note explaining that he had known his son was gay for years.

"I overheard your phone conversation with Mike last night about your plans to come out to me.

"The only thing I need you to plan is to bring home OJ and bread after class. We are out, like you now. I've known you were gay since you were six, I've loved you since you were born."

The letter ends: "P.S Your mom and I think you and Mike make a cute couple."

The letter appeared on the Facebook page of an anti-homophobia organisation, FCKH8.com, on Friday and has been liked by over 78,000 people and shared more than 42,000 times.

People posted comments about the letter, saying it "brought tears to my eyes" and "if only all parents were so loving".

FCKH8.com founder Luke Montgomery told Yahoo that the letter was emailed to them by Nate, and that it had brought tears to his eyes.

The letter has been picked up by organisations around the world including the UK's Telegraph,  Huffington Post and Daily Mail.

It comes after The Definition of Marriage Amendment Bill that would legalise same sex marriage secured two thirds of MP votes in Parliament this week.

All parents need to take a cue from this. it is your child, the one whose booboo's you kissed, whose tears you wiped up, the same child you kissed and read books to for years. They don't turn into a monster as soon as they discover they are gay. They are still your child and always will be. Shame on the parents who turn their backs on their own flesh and blood.

Exactly! How does any parent quit loving their child over sexual orientation?! If my child sexually assaulted someone or sexually abused a child, that would be different & I might struggle to maintain unconditional love for her. But even if one believes that gay sex is a sin, we *all* sin! Not one human doesn't sin! We are not G-d & it isn't our place to judge.

Even if my kid was in jail for murder I'd still love the sinner, but not the sin. Not that I'm saying being gay is a sin, but just proving my point about how much I love my kids, truly love them. I will visit them in jail, tell them I love them, but also tell them how I hate what they have done.  When it comes to life in general, I just want them to be happy. Happy with their life, happy with who they are, the whole cake. It breaks my heart when I talk to people I know or meet and they say how their parents refuse to talk to them because they are gay. I couldn't imagine being so cold to my child. I can't say exactly how I'd react initially, because my babies are still that, but knowing who I am. I would get over my shock quickly and just continue loving them anyway.
