MA High School Principle decides to punish the top achievers, because it wouldn't be fair.....

Posted by   + Show Post

A Massachusetts principal has been criticized for canceling his school's Honors Night, saying it could be 'devastating' to the students who worked hard, but fell short of the grades.

MyFoxBoston.com reports that David Fabrizio, principal of Ipswich Middle School, notified parents last week of his plan to eliminate the event.

"The Honors Night, which can be a great sense of pride for the recipients' families, can also be devastating to a child who has worked extremely hard in a difficult class but who, despite growth, has not been able to maintain a high grade-point average," Fabrizio penned in his first letter to parents, the station reported.

Fabrizio also said he decided to make the change because academic success can be influenced by the amount of support a student receives at home and not all students receive the same level of emotional and academic support at home.

Some parents disagree with his philosophy.

"It's been a tradition in Ipswich, and you're very proud as a parent to see your child, as well as some of the other children who made, really, some great efforts," Dave Morin, a parent, told the station.

Fabrizio says he plans to include the honors ceremony with a previously planned end of the year assembly where students will be recognized in front of the entire student body.

the article says both that he's cancelling it, and that it will be held later in a different format.

Try again.....It's the principal who makes no sense, not the article.

Oh, too bad, so sad.  Get a life.  If you bothered to click on the link to the local Boston affiliate, you could see their discussion on how the principal felt singling out the highest achievers would devastate the ones who didn't make the honors list.  The guy's an idiot who is contributing to the dumbing down of school children.

The misleading headline is so typical too.

yeah, your trolling is sad. I do agree the principle is a dipshit, but he's not punishing anyone.

He cancelled the honor's night dinner and ceremony, which was an anual event at the school.  Instead, the kids will just get recognized at an assembly at the end of the school year.  It's hardly the same thing.  In fact, he could do both, kwim?

It's my post, so that makes you the troll.  You do seem to enjoy following me around CM making your cryptic, idiotic and uniformed responses on my replies.  FYI, when one takes away something from others that they have earned, one is punnishing them.

While I agree that it's dumb who is really to blame? We've made schools cut gym and certain activities because it might make kids who aren't athletic feel bad. It was only a matter of time before that philosophy extended to academics.

I wonder if the are cancelling the sports awards night, and pep rallies or any other sports oriented school functions?  After all....we wouldn't want those who don't excel in sports to get hurt feelings...

I actualy ike the idea of scrapping the Honors Night  and replacing it with a school wide recognition.

The way the story reads in the beginning is that the honor will be eliminated. When in fact, it is not at all; it is being expanded so that the students are honored in a school-wide event and not just a cloistered night of honorees only.

But then again, it is Fox news and they always have a tendency to skew facts.
