Melissa Harris-Perry saying in an MSNBC "Lean Forward" ad, "We have to break through our kind of private idea that kids belong to their parents or kids belong to their families and recognize that kids belong to their communities."

Reading (Listening) comprehension comes in useful at times like this.

No where does this say, "Children do not belong to their parents" as you suggested. Everybody. That means Children DO belong to their parents.

This also seems to be talking about making investment. When it comes to kids, it does make sense to invest in all kids. Because even if the kid is not yours, they are very much party of the community and will shape the community in the future.

Exactly...these children won't remain children...they will grow up to be the next round of adults leading and maintaining the community...if you give up on them as children and let them loose as adults, it impacts the entire community...and the cycle continues...

What exactly is wrong with caring for and investing in all children?

This doesn't state what you claim. You should listen to the speal - yes we as citizens need to care about the education and stablity of all the children in the world

I for one am extremely thankful for the village.  My kids are benefiting from all the support I get from the community around us.

This is more true than you may want to think. Children used to literally belong to their father. He had the right to sell them or beat them almost to death or put it in a small cage to live in or throw them out of the home at eight years old because he didn't want to feed it anymore. It's been more than a few decades since wives and children ceased to be property. It has made life harder for parents but the lives of children have been much improved.

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

What exactly is wrong with caring for and investing in your OWN children, and not expecting everyone else to pick up the slack for you?  Don't have them if you can't take care of them (those who can't through no fault of their own excluded, of course).
