West, Texas Rocked by Fertilizer Plant Explosion!

(CNN) - An explosion ripped through a fertilizer plant Wednesday night in West Texas and may have caused dozens of injuries, officials said.

A hospital in Waco, Texas, has been told to anticipate 100 injured people coming in from the fertilizer plant area, an official at the medical facility said. Glenn Robinson, CEO of Hillcrest Hospital, said a field triage station was being set up at the plant some 18 miles north of Waco after the Wednesday night explosion.

A photo after the explosion -- which reportedly happened around 7:50 p.m. (8:50 p.m. ET) -- showed a huge plume of smoke rising high into the air.

The West Fertilizer Plant is located about 20 miles north of Waco. A school and a nursing home are among the buildings near the plant, CNN affiliate KWTX reported.

Worth noting, if you are in the area, but a quick drive to Lorena will get you the best darn cheese you will ever have. I miss The Texas Cheese house so very much. Oh! And BJ Luigi's in Robinson.

Quoting Mommy_of_Riley:

We go to the Czech Stop a lot. It's the only place near us to get Kolache!

Quoting Bigmetalchicken:

They got everyone out of the nursing home safely.  But at least five West Firefighters are still missing, and I know of at least one Dallas fire chief has gone missing. This entire town has been rocked by this. West is a very small, close knit community. Many of the residents have had their families live in West since they came over from the old country.

It is a town that any Texas roadtripper will mention with affection, because you just can not drive through without making a side trip to the Czech Stop for Kolaches and sausage.  It is a place where elderly people offer to play with your fussing child, so mommy can eat her meal.

I am just broken hearted about this. I really don't know how the town will recover, because their middle school was demolished in the blast, and over half of their highschool got blown away.

Quoting Mommy_of_Riley:

No reported fatalities yet... But a nursing home collapsed in the explosion as did other buildings.

Quoting rfurlongg:

Wow. Hope there are no fatalities. Do they know what caused it?

That is incredible!  is your power still out? Hope they get you back on line soon if so!!

My heart goes out for those affected and those here with loved ones in the area.

Quoting Bigmetalchicken:

I am in Fort worth, and the blast was so bad it caused a 2.5 earthquake here, and knocked out the power at our house.  We thought it was from the storm, but when my husband called because it still wasn't back on at noon while it was sunny, the company told us it had to do with the West explosion.

Quoting fireangel5:

They said a large area is without power. I hope you hear from them soon!!

Quoting Jacqalyn:

My uncle ( by marriage) has family who live in West. I keep checking on Facebook to see if they have heard from them but nothing yet.

My aunt and uncle( the one above) live in Lott and my brother and his family live in Chilton . This has hit way to close to home.
