Another Atheist whining about bibles....

Posted by   + Show Post

An atheist in Georgia is launching an assault on the presence of Bibles in a state-run vacation lodge. Ed Buckner, an author and the former head of American Atheists, an organization devoted to church-state separatism, apparently complained last month after he found Gideon Bibles at a lodge he rented in North Georgia.

While Buckner, 67, believes that the presence of the holy books represents a violation of the separation of church and state, some politicians, including Gov. Nathan Deal, a Republican, disagree with this assessment, Reuters reports.

After his stay at the lodge, Buckner complained and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources then reportedly removed the books from cabins and rooms at state parks while the issue was being reviewed. However, Deal ordered that the Bibles be returned — an action that is sure to draw the ire of atheist activists.

In fact, Buckner is considering a lawsuit and is calling the scenario “outrageous.” It isn’t uncommon for activists to take to the courts, as TheBlaze has repeatedly highlighted, to make their grievances heard.

“I can very much imagine this turning into a lawsuit,” he said, according to Reuters. “It’s outrageous that anybody thinks this is acceptable.”

In a statement, though, Deal noted that he and the state’s attorney general, Sam Olens, are in agreement that the return and general inclusion of the Bibles is permissible.

“These Bibles are donated by outside groups, not paid for by the state, and I do not believe that a Bible in a bedside table drawer constitutes a state establishment of religion,” the governor said. “In fact, any group is free to donate literature.”

A Gideons spokesperson told Reuters that the organization, which is said to have donated billions of Bibles since its inception, has not yet seen the presence of their books challenged in other states. As for the governor’s pledge to allow other literature, atheist activists may end up taking him up on that offer, as they have taken similar stances and actions in the past.

Is is a mental or physical violation? I mean, I don't get all offended because there is a book that was donated sitting in a drawer. I don't HAVE to read it, neither do you.

Quoting mikiemom:

But you shouldn't have to do that, if you wanted to read the bible I'm sure you would seek one out.

Quoting tnmomofive:

Whenever I have seen any bibles at a hotel they are always shoved in a bedside drawer. That is such a big threat.Shoved in a drawer out of site not down my throat.

Quoting mikiemom:

Aother bigoted christian pissed because they aren't allowed to force their religion down peoples throats. Why can't you be satisfied with having your bibles at home why do they have to be in public places?

I haven't stayed at the hotel again, I ensured that the bible was not  a bother to the next guest.

Quoting talia-mom:

How often do you search every drawer in a hotel and do you do it so you can get offended

Any chance you all will catch on at some pont?

Quoting romalove:

Damned atheists just don't know they are supposed to sit there and shut up and allow religious literature everywhere including in state sponsored accommodations.

Tsk tsk tsk

I don't make these kinds of complaints.

I also don't complain if others do.

It is their right.

When will you catch on to that?

It is kind of silly for Bibles to be in hotel rooms and other lodging facilities.  It's silly for this guy to make such a stink about it, but it's never made sense to me why the Bibles are there.  If someone really needed to read a Bible while away from home, wouldn't they just bring their own?  It seems a little "pushy" of Christians to think they need to donate their texts to these establishments.

Ugh...an atheist pissed off because he thinks, assumes, that Christians are pushing their beliefs on him. Isn't that what he's doing right now by making such a big deal of this?! If he were to take it to court he'd be doing the exact same thing that he's accusing the Christians of doing. On a different note,Christians do the same thing. They complain that others bash and try to change their views but in reality, they're trying the same thing with other ppl. Ugh...the ugly world of ppl always trying to change other ppls religious views and then complaining when another group does the same thing back.

Sorry but I think this man is silly. If I saw the Koran or something different I'd probably look at it and think "oh ok." I'm a Christian but other religious texts wouldn't make me complain

If you don't believe it, dont' read it. It's simple. If you dont believe in God, don't go to church. Not that hard. What seems to be hard is people not attacking those who do believe. I can respect others beliefs. Too bad people don't afford me the same respect.

How do you know it was a bother to the next guest? What if the next guest was a born again Christian and that book in the drawer was important to their spiritual health? What if their house burnt down and the one comfort to them was that book sitting in the drawer? You would assume that everyone was like you and then make yourself exactly like what you seem to hate so much.

Shouldn't have to do what? The bibles are already in the drawer. Not even placed ON the bedside table. You have to seek them out to find them.
