SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) —A conservative group is calling for a statewide boycott of Harvey Milk Day and urging parents to keep their kids home on May 22, the day honoring the slain gay rights leader.

KCRA 3 has confirmed has purchased air time to launch radio ads this week in Sacramento and Los Angeles.

It's a message generating plenty of emotion and reactions in both the gay and straight communities.

"Harvey Milk was a sexual anarchist," said Randy Thomasson, president of, at the state Capitol on Friday.

Milk was the first openly gay person elected to public office.

The San Francisco supervisor was assassinated in office in 1978.

After years of debate, California school children are now taught lessons about his life on Harvey Milk Day, which is held May 22, Milk's birthday.

The holiday has been on the books since 2009, but is airing radio spots urging parents to keep their kids at home.

"They'll be taught an agenda that attacks our family values," the radio ad states. "Moms, dads, protect your children from Harvey Milk indoctrination. Keep them home May 22."

But the ads are preaching the wrong message, Christopher Cabaldon, the openly gay mayor of West Sacramento, says.
