Greece girl Maria: Gypsy couple accused of abduction

 'bought blonde child for £900'

Eleftheria Dimopoulou, 40 with husband Christos Salis and little Maria

A Greek gypsy couple charged with abducting a blonde girl paid £900 for her when she was two weeks old, a man has claimed.

Maria, who is believed to be about five years old, was allegedly sold to Hristos Salis, 39, and Eleftheria Dimopoulou, 40, by a Bulgarian couple at their settlement.

Babis Dimitriou, president of the Gypsies of Northern Greece, said yesterday Maria’s natural parents offered him the child for 1,000 euros when she was 15 days old in 2009.

Mr Dimitriou, who is also based at the settlement, said: “The child was sold to its present mother... and I presume the price was similar to the relatively low price requested of me.”

He added: “They were here last week when the couple were arrested and Maria taken to a home. Since the outbreak of the commotion they vanished from here.”

Authorities are now searching gypsy camps in central and southern Greece for them.

Interpol has launched a global investigation after Maria was found at the Tabakou gypsy settlement near Farsala, Greece, during a drug and gun raid last week.

Police photos showed a haul seized on site including chainsaws, a pen-style pistol with bullets as well as drugs.

Credit cards, believed to be stolen, were also pictured alongside a pistol and a balaclava.

Around 8,000 inquiries have been made about Maria, who is being cared for by charity Children’s Smile until a foster family can be found.

President Kostas Yannopoulos said the “overwhelming number” of children offered for sale are girls.

He said parents from “at least seven countries, including Britain, America and South Africa, have phoned with information about their own children which have gone missing, in the hope that Maria is one of theirs”.

Salis and Dimopoulou were yesterday remanded in custody after being charged with abducting a minor and holding false papers.

Salis laid all the blame on his wife and offered to help police find the Bulgarian sellers but he was refused bail.

A dental test yesterday revealed Maria is five or six years old.

Children’s Smile said she was treated like a “dancing bear” because of her looks and made to beg. A video of her dancing reluctantly for a crowd has been released.

Dimopoulou claimed to have given birth to six children in less than 10 months.

The family were claiming more than £7,000 a month in benefits saying they had 14 children.

The parents of missing Ben Needham and Madeleine McCann have said the find brings them hope.

Lisa Irwin's parents lawyer is on this now, claiming maybe it is her. She does look like Lisa but the age does not match up. Lisa would be 3. If it is true that this little girl was bought at two weeks old then this couple is all she knows as parents. She looks so sad. I hope they can solve the mystery. If it is true that her bio mom sold her child I do not think she should get her back. But whether or not this couple gets to keep her depends on whether or not she is treated well. The look on her face makes me believe she is not in a happy home.
