White Guy Accused Of Filming 'Knockout Game' Attack On Black Man Gets Charged With Hate Crime

Knockout game arrest

WASHINGTON -- A 27-year-old Texas man was arrested by federal authorities on Thursday for allegedly filming himself punching a 79-year-old African-American man and breaking his jaw. Authorities say the assailant was attempting to see whether a "knockout" attack on a black victim would be nationally televised.

Conrad Alvin Barrett was arrested and accused of punching the unnamed victim last month and filming the assault. Barrett allegedly showed the video to a man outside a restaurant who he didn't realize was an off-duty investigator. In the video, the attacker approaches the elderly African-American man, asks him "How's it going, man?" and proceeds to punch him before laughing, saying "knockout" and fleeing in a vehicle. Barett has been charged with a hate crime.

According to the federal complaint, in another video found on his cell phone, Barrett allegedly says that African-Americans "haven't fully experienced the blessing of evolution" and uses the n-word. The complaint alleges Barrett said he had been trying to get up the "courage" to play the knockout game for a week.

The "knockout game," in which an assailant attempts to knock out a victim with one punch, has received a lot of press recently, though similar attacks have dated back as far as 1992, according to the complaint.

"Hate crimes tear at the fabric of entire communities," Acting Assistant Attorney General Jocelyn Samuels of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division said in a statement. "As always, the Civil Rights Division will work with our federal and state law enforcement partners to ensure that hate crimes are identified and prosecuted, and that justice is done."

Barrett's attorney, George Parnham, did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Huffington Post. However, Parnham told CNN that his client, who is currently in jail, has bipolar disorder and takes medication.

Barrett will appear in court on Friday. He faces a maximum of 10 years and a $250,000 fine if convicted.

HOUSTON (AP) - A white Houston-area man was arrested Thursday on federal hate crimes charges for allegedly shooting video of himself sucker-punching a 79-year-old black man in a "knockout game"-style attack.

Conrad Alvin Barrett, 27, made a brief appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Frances Stacy, who scheduled a detention hearing for the Katy man on Friday.

According to prosecutors, the attack happened Nov. 24 in Katy, but it wasn't until 12 days later that authorities connected the attack to the cellphone video of it.

Authorities learned of the case because Barrett allegedly showed the video on the night of the attack to an off-duty arson investigator he had just met at a restaurant in nearby Folshear. According to the criminal complaint, Barrett asked the off-duty investigator and the woman with the investigator if they knew about the knockout game. He told them he played earlier that day, then showed them the video, prosecutors allege.

The investigator then flagged down a uniformed officer across the street and led him to Barrett.

The attack video doesn't show Barrett's face, but investigators matched his voice to the voice in the video and the couple at the restaurant told investigators that Barrett was wearing the same shorts and shoes at the person who shot the video.

According to prosecutors, the video shows Barrett approach the victim and ask, "How's it going, man?" A "loud smack" is then heard, the victim falls to the ground, Barrett laughs and says, "Knockout." The assailant then flees in his vehicle.

The victim lost three teeth and needed surgery to repair his jaw, which had been broken in two places. He was hospitalized for more than four days, authorities said.

Investigators retrieved other videos from Barrett's phone, including some in which he uses racial epithets and talks about trying to work up the courage to play the knockout game, the complaint states. In one, Barrett says: "That plan is to see if I were to hit a black person, would this be nationally televised?"

U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson said Thursday that such crimes won't be tolerated.

"Evidence of hate crimes will be vigorously investigated and prosecuted with the assistance of all our partners to the fullest extent of the law," Magidson said.

Barrett's attorney, George Parnham, said Barrett has bipolar disorder and has been prescribed heavy medications to treat it. He said Barrett's family "feels horribly sympathetic" for the person who was attacked.

"When you start peeling back the layers of the onion and look at the mindset behind the action you soon realize there's a mental issue," said Parnham, who added that he's trying to gather as much information about Barrett's mental health as possible.

If convicted of the hate crime charge, Barrett could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison and fined up to $250,000.

probably because they dont have evidence and backstory of hating on black people... combine the two and wallah....hate crime.  Sometimes some kids are just too stupid to realise what they have done...or sometimes the person committing the crime are actually doing it because they really dont like a particular race.  Maybe the black kids doing it are just wankers who think theyre cool...rather than targeting a white person for being white?

This makes me literally sick to my stomach.  Something is seriously wrong with the mind and soul of anyone who thinks this "game" is fun.  Anyone who does this deserves a long prison sentence.

But did he use the n-word when he did this to the guy?? And on the cell phone did it say that he was going to knock out a black person?
What he did was horrible. And I really do dislike "hate" crime charges. Because to me, anytime of assault or murder is a hate crime.

The men in NY were charged with a hate crime for attacking jews as they targeted jews

this man targeted this man because he was black

in the other instances, the victims were white black and other...and were not target based on race
