Conservative groups mistake academic study of romance novels for ‘government-funded porn’

According to The Daily Caller‘s Patrick Howley, “Obama’s federal government funded [a] hardcore porn project.”

Conservative groups are already lining up to protest the “Popular Romance Project.”

“We are appalled that the federal government would use taxpayer funds to promote pornography,”said Dawn Hawkins, executive director of Morality in Media.

Far from “promoting pornography,” the Popular Romance Project is an academic endeavor co-sponsored by the American Library Association and the Library of Congress Center for the Book. According to its official website, the Project “will explore the fascinating, often contradictory origins and influences of popular romance as told in novels, films, comics, advice books, songs, and internet fan fiction, taking a global perspective—while looking back across time as far as the ancient Greeks.”

The Daily Caller‘s Howley mocks the project at length before linking its existence to what he believes were false Democratic claims about a Republican “War on Women” in the last election.

Women, however, make up 91 percent of romance readers, and are the target demographic for the Project whose existence Howley mocks.

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) received $914,000 over three years — a small fraction of its $153 million yearly operating budget — from “Obama’s federal government” to partially fund the project.

In Right Wing World, almost anything can be porn. Remember, a flag with some rings on it makes some of these people all hot and bothered!

LMAO...I think of hardcore porn and go straight to animals or S & M.  Not feathers and half a nipple

The government should not be funding stuff like this in the first place. If ssomene has a driving desire to know that much about romance, they should fund it themselves. There is so much waste in the budget.

Why should the government fund this study? That is the real issue.

And many romance novels have some fairly soft core descriptions of boinking.

I'm not seeing how this is related to porn.

I do, however, wonder why the Govt is funding this.

Who needs to study this anyway, especially funded by the government?  How stupid.  If we are going to study something, let it be something that actually benefits us, like medicine or science.
