Some thoughts from a gun owner's perspective
Maybe it's just me, but I don't see the big deal about just using common sense when it comes to guns! We own several guns, 9 to be exact ( 3 handguns, 3 shotguns and 3 rifles). When the guns are not being used, or carried, or cleaned, etc., they are locked in a gun safe. My handgun is on my person a great deal of the time. At night, there is a loaded 12 gauge under the bed; during the day, it goes back in the safe. At no time, even when the guns are not locked in the safe, are they accessible to children or anyone else for that matter without us knowing about it; they are either on our person or within arm's reach. Obviously, when we are not home, whatever guns we don't have with us are locked in the safe.
I am only responsible for what is within my control. It is within my control to keep my guns either on my person, within arm's reach or in a locked safe. It is within my control to practice gun safety rules every single time I handle my gun and to teach my children to do the same. It is within my control to keep a list of our firearms, model numbers and serial numbers in the event they were to get stolen and I need to make a report. It is NOT within my control to prevent someone from breaking into my house, breaking into our safe, stealing our guns and using them to commit a crime. If that were to happen, I would then become a crime victim for having my property stolen from me and it is up to me to report it as soon as possible.
There is nothing magical or mysterious or complicated about gun safety; it's just common sense!
