This elementary school is pretty awful, and it’s principal even worse

By 1 hour agoOdd News

The New York Post had an exclusive report this weekend about PS 106 and its principal, Marcella Sills, in Queens, New York, and wow. If the claims are true, it might just be the worst school with the worst principal in the country.

Some of the terrible things allegedly happening there include:

  • The school nurse doesn’t have a properly equipped office.
  • An unorganized library described as a “junk room.”
  • There are no substitute teachers; kids from an absent teacher’s class are put into other classes for the day.
  • Classes are being held in dilapidated, “rat-infested” trailers.
  • Students have not been given math, reading, or writing books.

Then there’s another big problem: Marcella Sills, a principal who is being paid six figures, allegedly, rarely shows up for work on time if at all. Inanother report on the matter published this morning, the Post informed its readers about a curious party for fifth-graders that Principal Sills has organized for the past three years. At a cost of $110 per student, children must wear bridal or groom attire. The Post writes, “The kids, many of whom live below the poverty line, must foot the bill for the strange get-ups, which Sills personally picks out at stores such as Men’s Wearhouse and David’s Bridal, parents and ex-teachers said.”

Currently, Ms. Sills has not commented on the allegations. Carmen Fariña, the newly named New York City school chancellor, announced that she has begun an investigation. Make sure you read the Post’s initial report and their follow-up from this morning, because there is more craziness within.

How is this going on? Is there no oversight? A school board? Superintendent?

I just don't understand how this could go on. Those poor kids.

It's a low-income bad neighborhood. It makes me sad but people would be surprized how many schools here in NYC are just as bad. It's disgusting. Its no wonder so many kids drop out or don't even bother showing up.

Wait what?!  Who organizes a formal for elementary age kids?  That's ridiculous.

And really, a fur coat?

 How does this happen?!

The new New York City schools chancellor is promising action in response to a scathing report about conditions at a school in Queens.

Carmen Farina sent her deputy chancellor to investigate claims that PS 106 in Far Rockaway lacks teaching materials and staff.

According to the New York Post, the school hasn't received books for the Common Core curriculum since Superstorm Sandy. The school was heavily damaged in the storm, and an annex building that housed classrooms was destroyed.

"Science used to be my favorite subject when it was there," fifth grader Heaven Talavera said. "But the science teacher left, and then there was no more science."

The report also says the school building is in disrepair and the principal is often absent.

There are also allegations of a bizarre mandatory dance in which fifth grade students were required to dress up as brides and grooms at a cost of more than $100 per child.

Students and parents say they don't have the necessary materials or classroom space to get a proper education.

Parents claim the principal does not have a professional appearance, is often dismissive of their needs and is rarely available.

"I've never had a conversation with her," mom Kay Talavera said. "I've seen her here and there. I saw her on the first day of school, when she has to be there. But other than that, I've never seen her."

"When you deal with the parents, there's never a smile," mom Nicole Mays said. "It's always with a mean face and stuff like that. So I look away. I stay away from her."

Some parents also complained about the pricey graduation outing where the kids wear bridal-style gowns and tuxedos. Others say it's beneficial for low-income students to see how the other half lives.

New York City Councilman Donovan Richards is calling for a full investigation into all of the claims.

"This is a school that's restructured and rebuilding. The biggest issue we're hearing is communication, and I think that's something that we're going to speak to the chancellor and the principal about."

School officials are expected to comment afterwards.
