Houma Police: 4 year-old dies from pit bull attack

Updated: Mar 26, 2014 10:59 AM EST

HOUMA, LA (WVUE) -

A four-year-old girl died Tuesday night after she was attacked by a pit bull, according to the Houma Police Department.

The attack happened around 7 p.m. at a residence in the Highland Apartment Complex.

Police say the dog attacked the child inside an apartment and when the mother fought the dog off her child, the dog attacked her too.

The mother was able to get away from the animal and barricade herself in a bedroom where she screamed for help. She was able to hand over the girl through a window to medical personnel.

The child received facial and head injuries from the attack and was transported to Terrebonne General Medical Center where she died. The dog's owner also received moderate injuries and was hospitalized.

Officers on scene say the pit bull was running loose inside the apartment acting in a very vicious manner. Officers had to utilize lethal force to stop the threat.

The child was transported to the hospital for medical treatment where she later died from injuries sustained in the attack.

The pit bull's owner was hospitalized due to injuries she received in the attack.

The four-year-old has been identified as Mia Derouen.

Animal control officers removed a second pit bull from the residence. The investigation is continuing and further information will be released as it develops.

While I am really sad for this poor child's family it happens quite often with lots of breeds. Making it a breed issue helps no one.

What a nightmare for mom.  That poor little girl, what a violent way to die.

I'm glad that they put the dog down. ANY dog that causes that much damage MUST be put down. I am disgusted that that one other dog (yes it is a PIT BULL) that attacked the four year old is being let live. Way to value the dogs life over the child's. The child will NEVER be the same and will likely have to go through YEARS of therapy. People actually started a FUND to try to save the dog!

Sick. Put the stupid animal down!

Great.  This breed will continue to suffer so long as there are  idiot owners incapable of properly training them.  These dogs never should have attacked anyone, and wouldn't have if the owner had known what the hell she was doing.

There is a time and place for all things, if you think about it.  This was not the right place for this type of dog.  Two big dogs in an apartment are not a good idea generally.

 That's so sad :(

I have to wonder what the circumstances surrounding the attack were and whether these dogs were treated properly or not.  In any case, it's horrible and a child is dead.  The dog(s) that attacked need to be put down.

If you're referring to the one in Arizona, it was allowed to live but with restrictions. It will live out its life in a facility and never be put up for adoption. It will be defanged, neutered, and micro-chipped.

In this case, questions are now actually turning to both the babysitter of the child as well as the owner of the dog.

Tragic. This breed needs to die out.
