The homeless, jobless woman we all (most) sympathized with who left her kids in the car to to go an interview -- was neither homeless nor jobless.

I try to ignore the news as much as possible. ;)

Of course, the article says she had part time employment and had a residence listed. Depending on circumstances, it may not change the story that much. Or it could completely change it.

It's fairly likely part-time work is minimum wage - working 20 hours a week at minimum wage is a joke to live on. She could have a relatives house listed, or something similar. She could sleep on someone's couch, or just use the address for applications and whatnot while she sleeps in a car or a homeless shelter.

Or she could be making bank with that part time job and actually have a house that she and her kids live in.

Who knows.

The question I'm wondering is whether journalists ever fact check the stories they pick up from news wires.

A few years back I was responsible for sending out a press announcement about a scientific breakthrough.  It got widely reported.   The newswire never verified the details of the press release I made, and most media outlets just reported the newswire story verbatim, also without checking.   Only a handful of specialist non-mainstream media outlets actually tried to contact me before publishing.

{Note: no, I'm not going to give details, I don't want to identify myself, so consider the above as hearsay, not something I will back up with evidence. }

Why doesn't anyone fact check before putting out a report any more? That is the bigger question.

BANG.  That to me is the bigger outrage.  News isn't about truth and accuracy in reporting.  It's all about the sensationalist headlines.  Who cares if it's the truth..."You heard it here first..."

I sympathized.

Having a place listed does not necessarily mean she lives there. It could be a residence of a friend or family member.

And you don't get much from a part time job.

I believe it's a hoax. Perhaps I'll be able to link in a few days or next week when it all comes to light. Like this story. And the gay waitress. And the gay birthday invitation. And the racist dorm room message. And a bunch of other ones.

I'm going to say, regardless of her situation, I never sympathized with her.  The answer is NEVER to leave young children alone in the car.  Had the worst happened and one or both children been killed by this behavior, nobody would be showing much sympathy.  The only reason people sympathize is because the kids were not in serious condition or dead by the time the behavior was discovered.

And who knows if this was the first time she did this?  Or would have been the last?  I keep remembering that horrible story a few weeks back where the Mom worked graveyard shift, so she left her 3 year old alone with snacks and a movie to go to work...all the time!  Except one morning, she found the boy dead on the floor upon her return.  Hmmmm.....
