Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson, 28, received an award for "extraordinary effort in the line of duty" months before he gunned down unarmed teenager Mike Brown and left him in the street for 4 hours last Saturday, reports Yahoo News.

Wilson's father, John Wilson, posted how proud he was of his son on Facebook:

"Very proud of my son, Darren Wilson on his receiving a Commendation from his Police Department," John Wilson wrote on February 11. "Congratulations Son."

Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson released Wilson's name during a press conference on Friday after 5 days of refusing to do so.

When reporters tried to contact Wilson, it was revealed that he and his family had "left town days ago."

Yahoo News reports:

Four days ago John Wilson turned to Facebook for support without mentioning his son by name.

"Dear FB friends, Our family is in need for prayers to be sent up for a family member," John Wilson wrote. "Circumstances do not allow for us to say anything further. Please pray with our family in mind. Put a covering of protection over our family member please."

A woman who replied in the comment thread told John that she could put him in touch with someone that "has been through many difficult times with his children. Prayers are what brought the family through the rough times. We are just a phone call away."

John Wilson thanked his many friends who were quick to offer encouragement.

"Please continue to do so as we deal with a family situation that is very challenging," he wrote.

In his last post this week, John Wilson shared a saying from a Texas evangelical pastor: "When something is ‘out of control' it is merely out of your control - not God's!"

The Ferguson police department has done it's best to paint Brown as the aggressor, describing Wilson as a "gentle" man and an "excellent" police officer who is "devastated" about killing Brown.

But he wasn't too devastated to stand over him and gun him down while the unarmed teen held his hands in the air.

The FBI is currently conducting an investigation, while the citizens of Ferguson continue to protest Brown's brutal slaying.

Michael Brown, 19, was unarmed when he was shot eight times in the middle of a street in Ferguson, a mainly black suburb of St Louis, at the hands of officer Darren Wilson.

The world has been left shocked by the shooting, which was followed by an instant crackdown on dissent around the streets of Ferguson as police anticipated significant protests.

They guessed right, and the town has been rocked by protests almost every day this week - often turning violent after dark as heavily armed police fired gas and baton rounds to clear the streets.

With police remaining tight-lipped about how their investigation is progressing, the emergence of Thee Pharaoh's witness account of the killing will likely do little to calm tensions.

Social media: The 27-year-old singer-songwriter took to Twitter after witnessing the Brown shooting outside his apartment

Last night about 200 protesters clashed with officers in the St Louis suburb after another tense day that began with authorities identifying the officer who killed Brown.

But at the same time as revealing the killer's identity, Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson released documents alleging the 18-year-old had stolen a $50 box of cigars from the convenience store and strong-armed a man on his way out.

After Saturday's shooting, the investigation into Brown's death was immediately handed over to Missouri State Police, but yesterday it emerged that the FBI has also interviewed witnesses as part of a civil rights investigation.

In the days ahead, the agents planned to canvass the neighborhood for more information, a statement from the U.S. Justice Department statement said.

Meanwhile, Mr Brown's mother and father, supported by national civil rights leaders Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, have become the unwitting faces of a new campaign against police treatment of African-Americans.

Ferguson is a town of 21,000 people, two-thirds of whom are black. Of the local police department's 53 officers, just three are black.

Brown's death had previously ignited seveal nights of clashes with furious protesters, but tensions eased on Thursday after Missouri Governor Jay Nixon turned oversight of the protests over to the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Gone were the police in riot gear and armored vehicles, replaced by a new patrol commander who personally walked through the streets with demonstrators. But last night marked a resurgence of the unrest.

Local officers faced strong criticism earlier in the week for their use of tear gas and rubber bullets against protesters. Missouri State Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson said one tear gas canister was deployed Friday night after the group of rioters became unruly.

According to a timeline of the shooting, the first bullets struck the 18-year-old just after 12pm Saturday.

2 moms liked this

I would say pretty disturbing video. They just left him there and didn't even call the paramedics for him. I think that says a lot about the police there. Shame on them.
