Ok, philistines, who knows who Hanuman is?   No, 'monkey god' isn't enough.   Tell us something ABOUT Hanuman!!

Hanuman is the greatest!   Really like, saved that whole Ramayana thing.

Otherwise, things would not have gone so well.

*raises a hand*

He was a strong and noble warrior, the epitome of Valour in the Hindu pantheon.

You can blame the modern view of him upon Wu Cheng’en who (loosely) based the character Sun Wukong upon Hanuman.

I will look up Wu Cheng'en.

I was actually rather puzzled at the popular Western ideas about Hanuman, which seemed to reflect a really...peculiar image of him.  I was wondering where that came from.

Online, I saw videos of a horrifically cute little monkey named Hanuman, who was obviously not a Curious George type character, but still seemed...weird.   Monthly compounded weird.

I guess what is peculiar is the idea that Hanuman and some of the other Hindu pantheon are somehow instantly 'pagan' or 'wiccan' or somehow connected to Europe, which I don't think is justified by the available documentation.

Years ago I went to a religious service with a Hindu priest.   One of the ladies who showed up was insisting all the Hindu gods originally came from 'the wiccan'.  AND OF COURSE the trident, lotus, blah blah blah.

It was kind of insulting, to be honest.

The Hindu priest was...ah...lancet, read this passage from Ramakrishnan, I want to see how well you can read'.  She continued on and priest was like, 'Ah...no'.

LOL.
