Republican John McCain hasn’t been on the ballot in Ohio in eight years but that didn’t stop Gov. John Kasich from voting for him.

Kasich, who has steadfastly refused to back GOP nominee Donald Trump, cast his absentee ballot on Monday, writing in McCain for president.

“He voted for McCain because he wanted to vote for someone who he could support,” said Kasich spokesman Chris Schrimpf.

Kasich, who launched his own bid for the GOP nomination in July 2015 and dropped out of the race in May 2016, has been one of the nation’s most vocal Republicans criticizing Trump and refused to attend the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

“I’ve long had concerns with Donald Trump that go beyond his temperament. We have substantive policy differences on conservative issues like trade, our relationship with Russia, and the importance of balancing the federal budget. I’ve held out hope that he would change on those disqualifying policy positions, but he has not. I’ve also encouraged him to change his behavior for the better and offer a positive, inclusive vision for our country, but he has not,” Kasich said in a statement after video emerged of Trump bragging about groping women against their will.

“It’s clear that he hasn’t changed and has no interest in doing so. As a result, Donald Trump is a man I cannot and should not support… Our country deserves better.”

Kasich’s vote for McCain won’t count because McCain isn’t a certified write-in candidate in Ohio.

Not who I would write in, but not voting for trump doesn't make someone an asshole.

If he truly voted his conscience, I am not going to bash him for it.

I guess he felt he needed to issue a press release since that vote will not actually be counted.
