Armed Citizen Shot Man Attacking Officer

(Ohio County, Ind.) – An investigation is underway after a woman who saw an Indiana Conservation Officer in a fight with a suspect shot the attacker.

Indiana State Police say the attacker, 32-year-old Moores Hill resident Justin K. Holland, died at Dearborn County Hospital soon after being transported there Monday afternoon.

Sgt. Stephen Wheeles says the conservation officer was responding to a report of a suspicious person in the 8300 block of State Road 56 west of Rising Sun around 12:30 p.m. That officer made contact with Holland, who was near a vehicle along the highway.

“At some point during their interaction, Holland began to resist the officer and became involved in a physical altercation with the officer.  A female who was at a nearby residence responded to assist the officer who was being overtaken by Holland.  At that time, the female fired one shot from a personally owned firearm at Holland, striking him in the torso,” explained Wheeles.

Holland was immediately given first aid by witnesses and EMS was notified. He was then taken to DCH where he was pronounced dead. Wheeles said an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning.

The conservation officer was injured in the fight with Holland. He was taken to DCH to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

“The identity of the Conservation Officer and the identity of the female shooter will not be released at this time pending the outcome of the investigation,” Wheeles said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.

Witness shoots suspect engaged in fight with conservation officer

RISING SUN, Ind. (WTHR) - A woman in southern Indiana shot and killed a man who was engaged in a fight with a conservation officer.

The officer responded to a report of a suspicious person in the 8300 block of State Road 56 west of Rising Sun around 12:30 p.m. Monday. The officer arrived to find 32-year-old Justin Holland of Moores Hill, who was near a vehicle on SR 56.

During the interaction between the men, police say Holland began to resist and became involved in a physical altercation with the officer, who has not yet been identified.

A woman who lives nearby came outside and saw Holland beginning to overtake the officer. She fired one shot from her personal firearm, hitting Holland in the torso.

Witnesses rendered first aid to Holland and called EMS. He was taken to the Dearborn County Hospital, where he died a short time later.

"I want to stress at this point that we don't know what the cause of death is - whether the gunshot wound was even the cause of death, or whether there was something else at play," said Indiana State Police Sgt. Stephen Wheeles.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine how Holland died.

The officer was treated at the hospital for minor injuries.

The woman who shot Holland has also not been identified, pending an investigation conducted by Indiana State Police. She is not currently facing charges in the incident.

Thats what I thought....but the article doesnt make much sense.  He was near a vehicle on a highway and the woman came out from a nearby residence?

Is this a park or a highway with residential homes off it.  Are these camping residences?

I think she was irresponsible.  She didnt know the situation, what if he was resisting...is that now life threatening.  I mean who the fuck does she think she is ...Bonnie of the backwoods.

Just running outside, willy-nilly, shooting people. Frightening.

Reminds me of the man who shot and killed his neighbor, while trying to save his car from being stolen.

Of course you people will side with the perpetrator. If the officer was being over taken by the perpetrator than good for her! If more people stood up for officers maybe the bad guys wouldn't be so bad. But I probably would have shot him in the leg or something.

I have mixed feelings. Good that the conservation officer was saved. At the same time it is a scary thought to me if someone just runs out with a gun to break up a fight.
